Gnarls Barkley – Going On

And you can stand right there if you want, but I’m going on…

You know Crazy was such a monstrous hit that it’s hard to say Cee-Lo is overlooked or underappreciated as a writer but he really is. There are some good writers out there but not many have the insight and soul that he does.

The touch and feeling of free is intangible technically,
It’s something you got to believe in.”

Going On is my favorite song from Gnarls Barkley’s sophomore LP The Odd Couple. At the surface the song is about a person determined to move on from a stagnant situation, one not worth the trouble because the person just isn’t ready to grow with you. This song represents that point of no return when you’ve tried everything possible to work with this person but have finally decided that it’s time to carry on and take care of business, regardless of what daunts ahead. The person can either come with your or they can stay behind, but no matter what you’re doing,

Connect the cause and effect,
one foot in front of the next,
this is the start of a journey.
And my mind is already gone,
and though there are other unknowns,
somehow this doesn’t concern me.”

On another note, I also think the song is about the pursuit of happiness, being enlightened and transcending to the next stage. Everyone develops at different stages and while caring is about helping others grow and gain balance, one has to make sure their personal growth is being sacrificed in return. Also, some people just value awkward things, in which case help is quite the task and may hurt yourself more then helping the other…

Anyone that needs what they want,
and doesn’t want what they need,
I want nothing to do with.”

“And you can stand right there if you want, but I’m going on…”
