Ladyhawke – Magic

My heart is dreaming but paris is screaming, paris is screaming all night long”

Ladyhawke is the solo project of New Zealand singer-songwriter Phillipa Brown, one of the top and best electro acts to come out of New Zealand in the past decade or so. Having just finished her tour in mid-November, plans for a second album and supporting tour has not been revealed just yet, though a new single “Magic,” was released in late October.

Her first album, which debuted in 2008, yielded 13 nominations in the New Zealand Music Awards and ARIA Music Awards, with eight wins total, a great feat for a debut album. Among the wins included NZMA wins for “My Delirium” as best single of the year as well as a win for “Album of the Year,” along with a win at ARIA for “Breakthrough Artist”. While “My Delirium” won recognition and praise, “Paris is Burning” was surprisingly a bit overlooked, and in my opinion, the best single from her debut album. While there’s some great remixes of the track from Cut Copy, Peaches and Alex Metric, I find the original in its best form.

Three things you may not know about Ladyhawke:

  1. She never wears women’s clothes, only menswear and boys underwear.
  2. She has Asperger syndrome, and believes much of her passion and obsession with music can be attributed to this.
  3. There’s a video game created in her honor, play it here.

One of my favorite quotes from Ladyhawke:

“We were all once teenagers, listening to music at full volume, jumping on the bed with the door shut.”
