Phew baby! What a beautiful re(direction) of an already exquisite song. When I heard this edit, I almost thought it was an edited original. Like an original recording of the song that had not been released. The thing I love about these kinds of edits (and by these kind, I mean old soul/jazz track edits — Nina Simone, Billy Holiday etc. “Remixed & Reimagined”) is how much respect is given to the original. I’ve been really into these “edits” lately, because they play with the song in such an simple way. This track doesn’t necessarily feel like a “remix” where bleeps and robot sounds are tossed around (though let’s be honest, we love those bleep/bloop/robotics in their own context), but a vision of the original artists work. I’d like to say that if the same technology were available during the recording of the actual original, perhaps it would have come out like this in the beginning.
Edits and remixes will always exist to throw a spin on something that already exists. Chances are we’ve listened to the song so many times that the lyrics are unknowingly grained into our heads, so a remix creates a new feeling. If it’s done right, it sticks just as the original song did, recreating the experience of our first listen. If it’s done wrong, it can ruin a perfect song. With that being said, I hope you enjoy this edit as much as I do!
