I woke up this morning to a solid inch or so of snow outside my window. My apartment was chilly and my coffee tasted extra nice. Admittedly this is my favorite kind of weather. Perhaps it’s a repressed nostalgia for my hometown of Syracuse, NY but that’s besides the point. There’s something about the gray skies and diffused light and sharp bite in the air that gets my mind going. It’s the kind of weather that increases my productivity, but come nighttime I’ve checked out and checked into my sweatpants, chai, and good book. Either way, it is still morning as I write this and my coffee is still hot so I’m more than ready (and oddly excited) to get this day started.
Beginning your day with good sounds is necessary. It’s not something we’re necessarily conscious of but it greatly impacts our day ahead. Think about what you listen to in the morning: is it a loud banger to wake you up or is it something mellow so compliment your waking up body? Personally, I believe in the latter. Today I put on this track by Fryars, the 22 year-old electro alias of Benjamin Garrett. This track begins with a bite- its melodic synths and staccato noises are sonic snow flakes falling down. Garrett’s vocals smear across the lush soundscape. It’s a nutrient rich song. By that I mean it’s a track that centers you…if that makes sense. It’s sublime etherealness that awes and calms (and warms when it’s cold).
Whether you’re listening to this on your headphones or through your speakers, get lost in this track and float and then carry on.
