I remember sitting in my sister’s ’03 Pontiac Grand AM (One which I later inherited in the summer of ’04). This car held some magical music moments for me, until the tape player got the Culture Club tape stuck in it for its final year on earth. This car is where I remember hearing Elliott Smith for the first time. It was Between the Bars and one of the first times in life I remember feeling deeply saddened by a song. Not just a song which that exacerbated the seemingly perpetual feeling of anxiety and self doubt all teens seem to harbor, but one where if the music didn’t chip some part of your soul or heart away the lyrics would surely do the job. I loved it. It may be more of a feminine notion, or maybe it is actually human, but sometimes you want to feel that darkness. Kodaline has created a song which has a similar affect. Sans Pontiac.
I think we all have the songs we listen to when we want to bleed without bleeding. It seems that the things people do that effects us the most, we usually can’t see.
“But If you loved me
Why’d you leave me?
Take my body
Take my body
All I want is,
And all I need is
To find somebody.
I’ll find somebody like you.”
This remix was created by Everything Everything and takes arguably one of the best sad songs released as of late, and creates a more upbeat sad song (oxymoron). Bringing in some additional higher vocals and well-placed drums, the songs deep elements still stand, but now rests on a catchy, percussion heavy base. I recommend listening to both the original and then this one for an easy roller coaster of emotion. Everything Everything is a British rock band that highlights their musical dexterity in this remix.
Kodaline is an Irish rock band specializing in music which is lightly dotted with some pop-y sounds and still emotionally charged and well done. “Music should have a purpose, you know. Our purpose is honesty.” Well put, gentlemen.
If you have a moment, you should watch the music videos of the original song as well. Just relax and let it out.
