Gramatik – Satoshi Nakamoto (The Funk Hunters Remix)

I’ve been on a hunt for bass loving funk and with this remix of Gramatik’s “Satoshi Nakamoto” it’s safe to say I just bagged the biggest buck of the herd! This is the shit that makes me want to jump up and down, sway back and forth, and bang my head all at once. I mean seriously, those horns? Those guitar licks? Those synths that bend at warp speed like an upside down rollercoaster? It’s just mindblowing!

And don’t get me started on the bars Adrian Lau & ProbCause are spitting here…it’s like I’ve been teleported back to rap’s heydey of boombastic beats bumping outside the bodega, new Timbs smell and all. They navigate The Funk Hunters’ new instrumentals with the quickness, and while I don’t give a shit if a rap song is a lyrical masterpiece or nothing but ad-libs, the lines these two dudes bring are straight heat. I mean seriously, “Epiphanies on symphonies…epigrams these words last for centuries” almost made me fall out of my seat! Combine that with music that reminds me of raging my face off to Big Gigantic years ago and you’ve got yourself a textbook winner.

Billie Eilish – Bellyache

Billie Billie Billie can’t you see, how your words just hypnotize me? I thought BLU J’s remix of “Six Feet Under” was an absolute banger, but Billie Eilish’s newest has me uncontrollably pressing the replay button over and over again. “Bellyache” is like someone went through my brain, found everything I like about music, and wrapped it all up into a hell of a song…an absurdly catchy but honest voice, smooth as butter production, and a chorus that has a perfect electronic kick. It’s pop fucking perfection!

Also, I’m usually not one to be super into album artwork but can we just talk about the vibes going on here…Eilish looks like street punk, streetwear, and Kill Bill Vol. 1 all came together to make a new aesthetic. If that’s the future of fashion then count me in! That’s also a good way to look at Eilish’s music…everything she’s doing has been done before in one way another, but the way she brings it all together is just so damn unique. If she’s making art this good with tools from the past at her disposal, I can only imagine what she’ll have in store for us down the road…

Justin Caruso – Talk About Me (feat. Victoria Zaro)

Not giving a fuck is *easily* one of the most important skills I’ve started to learn. I used to always care about what people thought about me in general or something as specific as what they thought of my laugh or smile. Hell, I remember getting mad as a kid when I would hear my family talking about me when I wasn’t in the room and not even knowing what they were saying. But today, I’m starting to just throw those worries up to the wind…

I mean if I’m trying to be my best person, then why should I care what you’ve got to say? There’s only one thing in life I can control and that’s my own actions. If you want to waste your time being concerned about my actions and waste your energy focusing on me instead of yourself…go right ahead! Like Victoria Zaro says over this super smooth Justin Caruso beat…”if that’s what you think, then talk about me”! I’ll be over here avoiding useless stress and enjoying life. We only have so much time on this earth and I’d rather spend it with a smile on my face.

.dxf – Efira

Do you remember that trippy, super depressing short film MORE? It was the one with the little stop-motion dude going through life in a factory, being super disillusioned with his life before becoming his own worst enemy? I was obsessed with it years ago, mainly cause of that brooding fucking song that I couldn’t get out of my head. I had no idea who it was by so I downloaded the short film through a YouTube converter and would watch it on repeat and be on the verge of crying nine times out of ten… Years later I found out that was “Elegia” by New Order (who would end up becoming one of my favorite bands) but I could never hear the song without thinking of MORE…so when I heard “Efira” by .dxf I was taken *straight* back to that short film.

I don’t think it’s a sample of “Elegia,” but the synth on this song has a similar sound… it feels like another view on being depressed and disillusioned in our weird technological world, now with a strange autotuned flow and thumping undertow. And usually I don’t care about music videos, but the video for “Efira” drives that home with a crazy balance between rough graphics and darkness.

“Efira” isn’t postpunk by any means, but to be real I honestly think we’re looking at 2017’s answer to “Elegia”…

Geordie Kieffer – Tastes Like Chocolate

The 90s are back and better than ever! We’ve got Tommy jackets, way too much flannel tied around people’s waists, and on this new song from Geordie Kieffer, quirky music that reminds me of the days of Beck. I’m not sure I ever wanted those first two things back, but damn I’m happy to hear someone carry the torch of straight weirdness in 2017!

I feel like in the internet age with parody musicians all over YouTube like a plague, being funny in your music just hasn’t been cool anymore besides punchlines in rap songs. You’re either super serious about your music or making fun of a genre by playing it (*cough* Lil Dicky *cough*) and there’s no room in between. That’s why I’m especially happy to hear Geordie do his thing…he’s made a song that’s silly but also been stuck in my head like glue since I first heard it! It goes from alt-rock singing and weird synthesizer sounds to a mostly rapped chorus, all while talking about worshipping his new girl, and it feels like such an honest way to get across all of his different feelings for a new girl who he would do *anything* for. He takes all the elements of how his girl makes him feel and wraps them up into a fun, carefree time that makes me smile over and over again!

Elephante ft. Nevve – Catching On (B-Sides Remix)

You know those songs that make you nod your head along like a bobblehead with an extra bouncy spring? Well if you don’t, you will now with this remix of Elephante and Nevve! B-Sides straight up kills it with an upbeat sound that makes me wanna break out my old shuffling shoes and neon hoops and get down this very instant…there’s no need for bells and whistles here, just a super fun synth and good vibes.

Of course I couldn’t talk about this song without mentioning its crazy good vocals and lyrics…Nevve sounds so damn smooth that I could just listen to her sing on repeat. And lyrically, all that talk about “love is languish” and “you string me along don’t you” hits *way* too close too home. It’s obviously wrong to blame someone for not giving me the perfect romance I have in my head, but sometimes things get tricky and it’s impossible to ignore how much it sucks at the time. You get an idea in your head of how your relationship should go, and when it doesn’t, it’s easy to feel betrayed…I mean we’re not perfect you know? We’re just human!

Anyways, if you’re feeling down about your love life, go cheer up and listen to this remix. Oh, and for the readers out there that somehow haven’t heard the original “Catching On”, today’s your lucky day! You can also listen to the equally amazing original below.

Migos – Bad and Boujee (Oren Yoel Remix)

Raindrop! Drop top! I like this remix a whole fucking lot! “Bad and Boujee” has been everywhere lately, from the radio to late night TV to playlists and everywhere in between, so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a *little* tired of it…but I can’t say I’m tired of hearing people turn Migos’s straight flames into something fresh and exciting! Fortunately for us, this dude Oren Yoel decided to drop what might be the song’s best remix yet!

Quavo, Offset, and Lil Uzi Vert’s flows are all still like a super strong energy drink in rap form, but Yoel trashes the original beat and inserts some crazy psychedelic guitars that don’t even sound like they’re from this century. I can imagine the three Migos on a festival stage like Woodstock just rocking out to this remix while rocking bandana headbands and all denim…I mean hey, rappers are the new rockstars right? Who needs a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo at Woodstock when we could hear Migos rap that crazy fast triplet flow for minutes on end!?

Okay so I *might* be letting my imagination run wild, but it’s hard not to when listening to such a fun song  that bounces between decades like this “Bad and Boujee” remix.

Filous – Goodbye (feat. Mat Kearney)

Man, it’s pretty fitting after yesterday’s post about heartbreak that I’m now listening to a track called “Goodbye”! Instead of getting all gloomy again though, I wanna talk about goodbyes that are…well, a good thing!

There are times in life where I’ve had the best of homies but also realized that they were holding me back. I loved them to death and still do, but when we’re together…I’m not in the best place. Their lifestyles just don’t jive with mine, whether it’s cause of wanting to always be somewhere else mentally with drugs or being stuck in a day to day mindset that doesn’t ever think about the future. Don’t get me wrong, it fucking *sucked* to part ways with them when I did, but at the same time I knew how much better *my* life was going to be once I was off doing my own thing. And yeah it’s hard at times when you’re trying to make new friends and don’t have people to kick back with on speed dial, but in the long run, it’s so worth it. At some point you realize you’ve only got one life and looking out for you is the most important thing, so don’t always be afraid to say goodbye.

Snakehips & MØ – Don’t Leave (Gryffin Remix)

I remember it clear as day…I was about to move at the age of 16 and was *beyond* in love with a girl. I wanted to say fuck the distance and stay together, but she was always the independent one and decided that it was best if we went our separate ways. I cried a ton and then built up some serious emotional walls because it felt like there was no way anyone could love her the way I did…from the crush in our elementary days to standing by her side as a best friend through years of bullshit to the overwhelming love I felt then.

Would my life be different now if she didn’t make that decision? Yeah, probably… But man, *years* have gone by and that shit still hurts when I think back on it. Hell, she added me on Facebook to see how I was doing a few months ago and seeing her with someone else still stung like walking into a giant wasp hive. I don’t blame her in the slightest for wanting to split up, I mean it was high school and all, but still…it’s crazy that so many years later, I still haven’t come within miles of loving someone the way I loved that girl.

As an old friend I really am happy to see her doing so well these days…but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that part of me still wonders if anyone will ever love her better.

RYDER – Nirvana

Pop music is more hit or miss than most genres, but this new song from RYDER is pop fucking goodness! She has the voice of a straight up goddess and combines it with a *seriously smooth* electronic instrumental that I could dance to for days. Plus, I love the lyrics about her wanting to reach nirvana… such a cool angle for a pop song when most of them are stuck on temporary highs (no intended diss to those songs, all music has its place!).

That makes the song feel even more personal though. We all have these surface level desires for clothes and drugs and jewelry and yet here comes RYDER, telling her significant other “fuck the material stuff, I want the real thing”! It’s more refreshing than a big bottle of water on a hot day to hear her lay down some truth on what her route to real nirvana is…it’s a different route for all of us of course, so now I’m sitting here thinking about how I’d achieve my nirvana. I’m not totally sure yet, but the way this song makes me feel is kinda like a piece of that nirvana, so don’t mind me while I hit the replay button to let RYDER take me there again and again!
