PHANTOGRAM – You Don’t Get Me High Anymore (A-Trak Remix) [feat. Joey Purp]

I’ve been a running around a chicken with their head cut off since I have been back in NYC, I mean that’s the NYC lifestyle so I didn’t expect anything less or any relaxation once I got here.  It’s been amazing to be back, back on the grind, back blazin’ trails with aggressive hardworking artists such as myself.  That’s why I love it here, people don’t stop whether they are working or playing, they just don’t stop, “sleep when you are dead”, I love that and you will probably hear me say it a lot because once you become an adult with conviction it should be a saying that you live by… And die by!

I am relating to this a lot in terms of the things that have changed in my life.  I was only away from NYC for 7 months, but being away for that amount of time I think I was able to look at NYC from a different perspective, decide who I really wanted in my life when I got back, who was there for me, who wasn’t.  Things change a lot when you have kids, it’s an eye opener in terms of the way your friends react towards you, how your lifestyle has to change a bit.  Don’t get me wrong I love the way my life has changed, I love all of the challenges and learning experiences but it is definitely crazy how your whole world can flip and you are rearranging EVERYTHING!  Certain things, certain people, they just don’t get me high anymore…

I needed a good feel good Summer track to get me ready for the weekend in the Hamptons, this one got me in the mood so press play and maybe I will see some of you out there! xx

I like hearing a musical group that goes in a nostalgic direction.  I like to reminisce on my days of total innocence and lesser expectations of the world.  So much on my plate these days that I finally understand the statement “You’ll sleep when your dead.”  Ain’t that the truth, definitely should have appreciated the days when I was able to sleep till 3 in the afternoon.  No use in looking backwards except to remember the sounds that we love so much that gave us our initial love for music.  Thanks Essex for the reminder of where my love for music came from.

EMPT Classic: Kanye West – Welcome To Heartbreak ft. Kid Cudi

We posted this track a while back, like way back, normally we would post the original and write something above it, but we are in the future now and I am doing things a little differently with this  EMPT Classic because I really dig the video which we never featured.  The title of the original post was “Say Goodbye to Hollywood.”  Funny enough I am in Los Angeles for a day and a night with my Little Bear and all I want to do is say goodbye.  Don’t get me wrong I am not hating on LA, but this place has too many memories that are still so fresh in my brain that bring me right back every time I am here and I don’t want to think about those memories.  LA and the memories are like a wound that has healed but now I am waiting for the scar to go away too, and as we know, scars don’t always heal.

Thankfully I am staying on the beach in Malibu and I don’t have to be in the heart of Hollywood where most of the ghosts of memories past still lurk.  It’s a beautiful view where I am at and the ocean is right in my ears so I need to go soak it all in before I have to jet in the morning.  Press play on this oldie but goodie.

Kid Astray – Fall To My Knees

Oh man, first I want to apologize for the lack of posts this past week.  Passover, Easter weekend, Coachella, (No, I didn’t get to go to Coachella!), and on top of all of that I am packing up my house all by myself with a 16 month old needing my attention, plus work.  No excuses tho, nothing should get in the way of giving you all the quantity and quality you deserve, I will make it up to you 😉

I got a nice relaxing weekend in Cali with some fam this past weekend and it fueled me up to kick it into high gear with all of the shit I have to do in the next two weeks.  As relaxing as it was it went by too fast and I was having the weirdest dreams about the past, this life I lived where I was walking on egg shells, too caught up in love, not worrying enough about myself, blah blah blah, you have heard it all from me before so I will spare the details.  I guess those dreams are a reminder of where I am at now.  I am able to completely be myself without being shit on for who I am.  I don’t have to answer to anyone (except my daughter, she is BOSSY!).  Everything is 100% in my control and it feels damn good.

That lyric rings true for what the rock bottom of the past looked liked, I was trying to be something for someone that I just wasn’t, but thankfully I found my true self again and remembered what pure joy and happiness was and is.  I like the vibe this track gives off and how it brought me back to the dreams I have been having to do a bit of dissecting.  Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and an amazing time at Coachella if you were lucky enough to go, press play!

QUIX – Riot Call (feat. Nevve) [RTT Premiere]

All I am really in the mood for these days is jams that are getting me ready for the Summer, can you believe it’s almost fucking here?!  EMPT gets to premiere this sexy number thanks to a gal who sends me many wonderful jams such as this by QUIX a New Zealand based producer and Nevve, I am going to have my Summer playlist locked down before Memorial Day weekend!

We have definitely been seeing a lot of “Riot Calls” so to speak in the recent weeks leading up to today, lovely Hype Machine has been booting numerous well received blogs from their site with no explanation and no warning, random folks are being ambushed on commercial airlines, our president is like a 15 year making some childish worldly decisions that will cause us all to flee to some livable planet in space.  I mean honestly I wake up hearing about all this stuff feeling like I am part of some satire movie, it just cannot be real.  It’s music that keeps me at peace with the world, music and my daughter.  My “riot calls” are tracks like this that hopefully get everyone pumped on a positive level of readiness for rooftop parties, new love connections, you name it, as long as it makes you feel good then that is something to riot about!

I need to get packing for my quick trip to Cali this weekend so imma put this baby on repeat to get me pumped and ready for sunshine. xx

DivineRule – (CLUE) WHO KILLED 2PAC and BIGGIE SMALLS?

You have the most to lose when you are ahead of the game.  The higher you are in this world the more people want to hate, the haters are always out for blood. Believe me I know this, I have always been a go getter, a really hard worker, I don’t believe in failure and if you tell me I can’t do something I work even harder because boy to I love to prove people wrong and I usually do.  People don’t like confidence because the majority of this world doesn’t have it, so much insecurities in this world, people could actually learn a thing or two from the confident few but they would rather hate, sad but true.  I think it’s just easier for people to focus on the negative, I wish I understood why, I can sometimes rationalize it in my head but I just don’t live in that type of head space.  I know what it’s like to feel like there is just this dark cloud hovering over your head at all times but that’s no way to live, it’s a shit way to live people.

I think the lives of Tupac and Biggie tell a true story of what happens when people live in a hateful head space, when jealousy and rage take over and you can’t appreciate someone else’s hustle.  To much competition since the beginning of time, how do we get rid of that, we probably never will but for a few of us and hopefully more and more as time goes on the word competition can leave our vocabulary. Who knows, all I know is I don’t focus on what everyone else is doing, I focus on my grind and what I need to do to keep pushing forward and eliminate haters, your haters are actually your biggest fans so learn to love them hard working badasses of the world, learn to love em’!

CATALINE – Shine Like a Firefly

 

Life is so fucking exciting right now, at least for me it is.  I have chosen to ignore all the bullshit that is going on in the world, ok I realize it’s not all bullshit so you can unclench those fists, but I just personally can’t tune into it anymore, at least for right now.  Everything in my life is really shining at a high potential.  I never want to say at it’s fullest because I always believe there is room for growth or change, and things can always get even better than you thought they could, believe me I know this for a fact.  All my friends keep bugging me about when I am going to start dating again, it’s been two years since I felt affection towards anyone.  My answer is this, I feel content right now, more so than I have ever been and I have been alone and so in control of my life the last two years that I don’t need anyone else, except my little amazing daughter of course, but I don’t have a longing for a companion.  Like I said I am shining, shining “like a firefly” right now and I think I would like to enjoy it a little longer before I take the chance having it put out.  No need for that, when you have that shine people notice, people respect it because they can feel it coming off of your body, it’s a wonderful thing and maybe one of these days I will share this shine with someone absolutely deserving of sharing it with.

This track is above and beyond for me. It’s all I need for this entire weekend to get me moving, the beat, the use of the synths and the effects on the vocals make this an effortless indie/dance pop track.  Lyrically nothing is complicated, just positive upbeat energy and a good message.  I gotta get ready to go sing my ass off tonight so hit play on this gem of a jammer!

Darci – Arts and Crafts

You ain’t seen nothin’.”

We all have a guard up when we are unsure of what it is we really want.  Sometimes this comes off the wrong way, I think we all care and want something substantial whether we want to admit it or not, you just have to find your “ride or die”, that one person that gets you.

This track definitely sets the mood for the rest of the weekend to come.  You want to play it cool like you don’t care, you gotta have that swag so she/he thinks you don’t care, but then you glance back real quick to show them there might be something.  Maybe this will be a weekend that comes and goes and you forget everything that happened, maybe it’s one that lasts in your mind and the people you meet last as well.  You just never know but that is the feeling I get from this track.  It’s got that hip-hop beat that makes you want to dance ever so slowly that every curve on your body has it’s own vibration.

The weekend is upon us like weekdays don’t even exist anymore, fuck yes!

Timaya & Electric Bodega – I Like The Way (Electric Bodega Remix)

This track brings me right back to trips I have taken to the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.  Two places I would love to be taking my daughter this summer if Zika wasn’t such a risk. BUMMER!  Hopefully they get a handle in that shit quick so I can go jetsetting ASAP with the little mini me!  I have been in Seattle the past few months and it’s literally been the rainiest Fall and Winter I have ever experienced.  I grew up here until Junior High and it was never this bad so you all can stop your “all it does is rain in Seattle” eye rolls, ya I see you!!

I cannot stop listening to this track this morning.  Timaya & Electric Bodega transport me to the future, just a couple months from now into Summer, I think we are all ready for it, for rays of sunshine, long weekends, outdoor BBQ’s and pool parties, brunches and rooftop shenanigans.  Ya all that stuff that we long for, well unless you live in Cali, but no offense I don’t want all that stuff year long, I want to be able to miss it because then it’s just that much more special and inviting when it’s all finally here.

All I can do is turn up the heat in my house, take off my clothes and dance carelessly until the evening festivities while I pretend I am somewhere else, do the same, enjoy!
