The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing/Down By The Water

Well I’m going to go ahead and say it’s officially winter in New York City and there’s not much any of us can do about it. The weather is brutal and the girls have disappeared. To quote my friend Annie,

It’s all about the face in the winter!”

Anyways, in an effort to live in denial for a little longer I’ve been listening to  one of my new favorite bands, The Drums. Inspired by the straightforward pop music and surf culture of the ’50s, this Brooklyn based act focuses on one thing – feeling.

We only write about two feelings: one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realize you will be alone forever.”

Now that’s what I call complex emotion! Everyone want’s to be a a grounded robot these days so I’m always happy when I hear people embracing the emotional dualities that make us who we really are. Why run from real emotion when you can just use them correctly? A good producer mixes sounds and styles to create something new, I like to think the people can do the same with their feelings.

Let’s Go Surfing is the obvious uptempo single but Down By The Water is by far my favorite track. It’s the 1950’s in 2009 form done right. The track is slow but creates this sort of beautiful agony as you sit there entranced in this classic love song. The Drums have made my Monday morning a painless experience, hope it does the same for you, enjoy.
