EMPT Presents: Balearea by Barry Poppins

IMG_0800

The kid Barry sent me this literally weeks ago but somehow in the endless waltz of learning, work, music and insatiable hunger for more that’s my life I haven’t been able to sit down and post it, until now.

For a quiet guy like me, one who enjoys the dwellings of solitude so much I rarely find myself alone these days. Lately though, I’ve been stepping back and taking time for myself and man is it helping. As I write this I’m at some random Cafe in Highland Park, listening to “Balearic” and enjoying an easy Sunday morning only California could provide. I don’t even know how I got here, but my new thing is just getting in my car and going…

I hear the birds on the summer breeze,
I drive fast, I am alone in the night
Been tryin’ hard not to get into trouble,
but I, I’ve got a war in my mind
I just ride, just ride…

Say what you will about Los Angeles but you just can’t beat this weather man, it’s 61 degrees, sunny as fuck and oh yeah, it’s February! Anyways, life on this end has certainly not been smooth sailing but I feel like things are finally coming back to a peaceful place and it most certainly has to do with stepping away from the things that just don’t agree with my disposition. It’s a hard thing to do, it may even be a little bit escapist in nature but sometimes you have to trust your gut and that’s all I’m doing.

This tape is the perfect soundtrack for Sunday. Put this on and go about your business, this is vibe music, sensual, sexy and feel good. This is Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, the type of shit you would place in the morning on a Yacht coasting off the south of France or at a 6am pool party in the Dominican Republic after you’ve been partying all night. It’s beautiful and euphoric chill out music curated at the highest level. Enjoy.

“This mix took me 6 months to finalize and is an ode to the “Balearic” realm of music that can’t be defined by words, only brisk, smooth sounds. It’s a collection of tunes that make me feel like I’m surfing on a rocket or floating on a Banana Boat. It’s a collection of songs that both calms and awakens me, if that makes any sense. For me, Balearic tunes are ones that can calm your nerves but make your nipples hard at the same time. And that is what these songs mean to me.”

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Juin 2013

It’s what y’all been waitin’ for ain’t it,
What people paid paper for damnit!” – Kanye West (Barry Bonds)

We know you all have a craving, we sensed it because so do we. This months Juin installment of LMDM couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.  Summer is finally here, our senses are on overload and what could be more satisfying to alleviate your crave then this.

If you’re an addict of LMDM, then you already know that each installment is going to be flawless in some way.  I can’t say one is better then the next because each one really does satisfy a distinct craving, energy, and each one is to be remembered for how it satisfied us.  Steph is the ultimate psychic to all of our musical taste buds.

Buddhists would say not to hold on to your cravings, let them go, and sometimes I could agree but I think healthy cravings are a part of life as long as your aren’t destroying your body and your spirit.  If whatever you are doing makes you happy then I say why not, because no mind is alike.

“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose.”  -Ayn Rand
The way each track compliments the next is unbelievable, it pretty much helps you to visual each day in its progression as it should be for the rest of the Summer; wake up, call in sick to work, grab a beer out of the fridge for breakfast, go to the beach, get a little tipsy, take a little cat nap before the night begins, maybe a little sex if your lucky, wash away the day, start all over, dance like you don’t give a F*&k, let the night take over your mind and body…Repeat tomorrow!
We can’t thank Steph enough for making sure we all didn’t go through withdrawal, it was getting close but it looks like we made it! Crave no more you sexy animals, press play and enjoy this sweet sweet Summer magic!

Hanni El Khatib – Penny (Classixx Remix)

The period of reflection that comes after some of life’s big events is a blessing that is, more often than not, taken for granted or overlooked completely. Not sure why that is, seeing as that’s where the learning comes from. I recently completed my undergraduate education, and have spent a lot of time reflecting. This period of reflection not only looks inward, but at what’s going on around me. I’ve realized that my friends and peers are doing pretty incredible things, hustling like it’s their job to make this city work for them. As it should. But I guess my period of reflection has also made me realize that everyone gets to a certain point in their life where they assess certain questions. For me, it was a simple question, that remarkably, stemmed from a vague memory I had of something I had tried a couple of years ago: OKCupid. Now mind you, this is not the time or place for me to talk about online dating, but I bring it up because I remember one of the questions on the personality tests was something like, “What is more important to you in life? Knowledge or power?” And while it is possible that I’m totally wrong about the phrasing of that question, I’m pretty sure those were the two choices. Something along those lines at least. I don’t know why that question stuck with me for such a long time and popped into my head, especially during this time of reflection. But it got me thinking: would I continue to be a student for life? Just because my educational career within an institution was completed, did that mean that I was obligated to cut myself off from continuing to learn?

Of course not. And while that may be completely obvious to everyone else, that’s an important realization not only to have, but to embody and remember every single day. Being a student for life doesn’t mean that you are naive or not intelligent, rather, that you are open minded enough and welcoming to new experiences, from which you gather a more clear view of your own life.

I’m talking about this only because I feel like I’ve known this song for a while now, and I think it’s consistency matches the level of balance in my brain right now. Classixx bring a minimal edge to this Hanni El Khatib track, making it into a blissful summer tune. Coincidentally, it makes for great background music during intense, but necessary, moments of thought and reflection. The subtle buildups that happen alongside even tones make for a calm and cool aural experience, definitely best enjoyed with headphones.

Classixx – All You’re Waiting For feat. Nancy Whang

Classixx fondles the inner ears with a pumped up tune that breathes the summer that is slowly creeping down our necks. That’s right fellas, Brooklyn is a whole different place right now as shorts make guest appearances for a day, and skirts appear by the plenty. This song breathes a whole new life to the Classixx that I know. Yes, it’s got the edgy ’80s styled electronic pop(!) but these bass lines…I don’t know, it might just be me, but I feel like there’s more happening here.

Hey wait a minute, just a minute I was ready for the flight
Got my bags packed waiting on the driver curve
So just a minute, take a minute for the change-up
I’m all set to go, set to go.”

I think it’s that feeling of lifting off that this song is on the edge of, lyrically, as it tells its story, but also in its tone. I feel like I’m just about to fly, but something keeps bringing me back to the ground. That’s cool with me, I’m okay with not flying today. I know, everyone says flying is like, the ideal thing to graduate to. We all want to fly I guess, and that’s fun but what about just staying put for a minute? Is life on the ground that hard to deal with? It can’t be. I’m sitting in a cafe working on my last paper of my undergraduate career, and you know what? The last thing I feel like doing is flying. I think that’s why I’m into this song, because I realized that I don’t have to take off.

We can just stay put and enjoy.

Classixx – Holding On

Modern definition of an anthem: at zero point during the song do you have any urge to think about, let alone look at your phone. Classixx’s yet-to-be-released-but-imminent instant classic “Holding On” possesses this quality to the max. It sends shivers up and down my spine while sending a sharp burst of energy through my heart. It has that Bag Raiders “Shooting Stars” quality–it makes your brain tingle and your body convulse–it’s just over the top euphoria.

When I first heard this song over a year ago during an Oliver DJ Set, many emotions seized me–one of which being that ever frustrating what the fuck is this song and where can I find it. Since then, I’ve lived vicariously through ripped versions of this “mystery song,” clinging to the hope that one day Classixx will actually release the song.

“I’ve been holding on…been high I can’t take it anymore…”

The song aptly has 11 words in it, because I give it an 11, an 11, a fucking 11. Hypnotic bass line, heavenly synth, sexy filtered French swag, some whisle echoing affect…it’s got just about every aspect you could wish for in a modern dance/house/disco anthem. And there’s not a soul in a club or car who will hear this song without entering the zone.

I hit up LA’s newest hot spot for Friday night discopolis, LURE, to check out the LA-based duo, along with RAC, Cosmic Kids, and Jerome LOL. What I saw kind of amazed me: a sold-out, beyond capacity show featuring nothing but Nu Disco-ey DJ sets. All four sets were lights out–but when Classixx played this song blased, a light came on within every person in the joint. To reiterate: when this song gets dropped in a set, panties literally drop, fists shamelessly get pumped, and good vibes are unanimously felt by all.

Like all of Classixx‘s originals and remixes, “Holding On” touches a nerve and refuses let go of that nerve. If there was any doubt about whether this uplifting, disco-based house sound has crossed the mainstream, it’s been erased. And if there’s a track to take it into the next stratosphere, “Holding On” is that track.

And fortunately, the kind bevy of producers teamed up with Red Bull for this “Endless Summer Tour” and left a mostly ignored gift scattered on some tables in the club. I scooped up the intriguing CD, which was a free compilation CD featuring the performing artists. Staring me in the face was–at long last–a high quality version of “Holding On.” While you can’t purchase a 320 (yet), the wait is almost over.

When I type Classixx into my iTunes, I know I can move away from my computer for a couple hours and life will be good. Fortunately, this experience will soon be expanded with the release of their debut album–which you will want to purchase. Until then, hold on. Tightly.

Broke One Vs Classixx – Nightcallomania (Jorge BOnJOuR Remix)

A few weeks ago we introduced you guys to French/DJ Producer Jorge Bonjour via his now wildly popular Kitsuné Club Night mix.  His style can be described as seamless execution. His mashups, blends and remixes sound so effortless and well done that it’s hard to think of the songs as not going together in the first place. Bonjour displays a master of both taste and technology, a skill set that that is in my opinion a prerequisite for the modern artist.

Today ol’ boy is back with yet another perfectly executed mashup sure to liven up your Tuesday morning. We’re excited to be the breeding grounds for this new young talent and we look forward for what’s to come, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A by Ryan Radler

Ah yes Monday, Sunday’s hangover returns once again…

In recent news, the S&P downgraded the U.S. Credit and apparently no one knows what that means, the stock market is in shambles and it’s only getting worse, Big Boy from Outkast got arrested on drug charges, great times all around my friends. Thankfully, Mondays on EMPT now mean the release of a new Ryan Radler mixtape and let me tell you folk, there’s nothing like some good music to keep your perspective in these times. Last week Ryan sent me an email kicking it about the inception of these wonderful mixes and I’m posting here because it sounds like me an all of my friends every weekend and listening to the tapes it couldn’t make more sense. Anyways, I gotta go work on the music for a few restaurants but press play on another wonderful mixtape, check out Ryan on Facebook and try to ignore the 25% loss on your portfolio, it will get better as usual. Enjoy.

Back in my loft, I began dreaming of Summers-gone-by. I remembered one of my favorite summers back in 2008 in Van Nuys, CA.
1. Crashed random friend’s house + Belonged to gay x-pornstar (Scariest/Nicest guy I ever met)
2. One very clean, but very ghetto “above ground” Pool + Floating blow-up chairs
3. Blistering hot valley sun + Not a cloud in the sky!
4. 12 pack of Corona + 12 slices of lime
5. The Bestest of Friends + One great little Basenji Dog named “Ghost”
6. The “Western Electric” Summer mix PodCast + A really powerful set of surround-sound computer speakers
Item #1 through #5 were enough to make the day a perfect “10”, but it was #6- my friends’ Summer mix music on the stereo- that made the day live on in my mind, Without the music that made the soundtrack of my Summer, I might have forgotten all about this glorious time in my life. The mix was filled with summery Rock & Roll, Electronic, and Folk music infused with 70’s loungy vintage organs and horns with conga breakdowns and dirty jazz tones.. The podcast spoke to me. It reached out and grabbed me by the floaties and slowly drifted me around the pool. It popped the caps of my beers. It took all my calls and forwarded them to voicemail. It held my hand and kissed me on the cheek and told me everything would be alright- and it was.
I have searched high and low for this mix, but to no avail. No one seems to know where it came from or how to get it back. It was at this moment that I decided that instead dropping into my usual winter depression, I would begin my own homage to this one summer day and resurrect the Summer mix that I had loved so much back in Van Nuys.

S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A :

1. Jump in the Pool – FRIENDLY FIRES
2. Make You Mine – MIAMI HORROR
3. Pacific Theme – BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
4. Un Homme Et Une Femme (Chant) – FRANCIS LAI
5. New Theory – WASHED OUT (RAC MIX)
6. Lisztomania – PHOENIX (Classixx Version)
7. Only Love Can Break Your Heart – I BLAME COCO
8. Puppets – DEPECHE MODE (ROYKSOPP REMIX)
9. Glad to Know You – CHAZ JANKEL
10. Heaven’s On Fire – THE RADIO DEPT.
11. Rad Racer – WORK DRUGS
12. Solitude Is Bliss – TAME IMPALA (MICKEY MOONLIGHT REMIX)
13. Zebra – BEACH HOUSE (RING TRACK REMIX)

Active Child – When Your Love is Safe (Classixx Remix)

Not too many will argue that slow music in the mainstream and underground has been pretty much absent for quite some time now. I can’t remember the last time I posted a song this slow and neither can I remember the last time I actually liked one. However, the Classixx remix of Active Child’s When Your Love is Safe has brought an end to the slow jam drought.

I woke up early in the morning and you weren’t there
I woke up early in the morning and I could have been anywhere
But I know exactly where I am
Somewhere between making love and being friends…”

Slow music usually means love music and this song is certainly no exception. I’m not into cheesy love songs but if the artists or producer captures an energy or powerful emotion then I’m right there with the rest of them tuning out.

I tried to call you in the evening but you didn’t pick up
Something about being busy, hustling just trying to make a buck…”

Sadly enough, that line reminds me of “love” in NYC. Classixx did an impressive job with the production, the impeccable arrangement makes a 73 bpm song move with a sense of power and passion perfectly suited for the yearning romance. I wouldn’t count on slow music making a comeback anytime soon but it’s nice to have a change of pace every now and then, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars

Thanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world but your here with me! I appreciate that.”

It’s the first of the month and 2010 is looking better and better by the moment. February was a great month for EMPT, our following has never been stronger and our new company is only a few weeks away from launch (stay tuned). Maintaing EMPT is hard work and you barely get to take a break, that is until Steph sends me her latest masterpiece and I get to sit back and get it ready for release. After an entire month of work it’s sort of like dessert after a big meal, though when you’re dealing with Steph is more like dessert before dinner. Either way, this tape is yet another completely different and unique experience, LMDM will never get old, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Mars:
March. Today marks 17 days until forthebeat is at sxsw and 20 days until the first day of spring, both can’t come soon enough. This mix aims to get you through the last few weeks of winter with your dancing shoes laced up tight to dance through the night (yes this was meant to rhyme). One of my favorite new artists is Coma Cinema, if you havent listened to the album yet, better get on it fast. Making Pitchfork’s forkcast last month, this band is about to be everywhere – “Flower Pills” debuted on LMDM last month, and this month brings you “Cop Caller.” The entire album Baby Prayers can be downloaded for free at www.comacinema.org – get. it. now.

Classixx – I’ll Get You (Gigamesh Remix)

Want to know how to get a party started in 54 seconds? Play the intro for this remix and then turn the volume up really really loud when the beat drops – satisfaction guaranteed.

Do you like bass?”

I’m still suffering from post L.A. trauma and all I can think about while listening to this song is driving down Pacific Highway windows wide open, goofing around with friends, taking business calls by the beach and living life the right way. Unfortunately, it’s Friday in NYC and the scenery is a bunch of mud looking snow. Anyone know of a Kush Doctor is Manhattan? Anyways, I have a million things to get done before the days end, thankfully I can blast this song all day and keep the fantasy alive, enjoy.
