Cold War Kids – I’ve Seen Enough

I like the emotion in this track, I had to listen to it for a few days to understand it for myself.  I think this is about being tired of the same old routine and I’m not just talking about for our self but the way the world has been functioning for centuries.  The same wars, same political problems which I am not even going to get into because I can’t deal with politics, fashion coming in and out but not really changing a whole lot if you look back.

We are human beings!  We have to start coming up with fresh new ideas, and stop repeating history.  I don’t know about you but I am always trying to come up with weird new ways to change the way the world is working, but its about getting people to listen to you and want to expand on your ideas, so speak up.  I definitely have new and improved ideas on music that I know is going to blow your minds, but be patient my friends, its coming!

I’ve seen enough of nothing new
The blacker stain on history or last laugh blues
Not gonna fight, not gonna cry
Not gonna shop around for one flag to fly”

This track and the drums makes me want to walk down the street in some big boots like I don’t give a damn and hold my head high, I love how the beat of a song can do that to your mood.  I wish I could go stomping around the city right now in this lovely sunshine but I gotta run to Brooklyn for a movie shoot.

I couldn’t leave you guys hangin’ another day without some good music, so press play and get your own ideas flowin’…Enjoy!

Coachella 2011 Recap – Mixtape

Earlier this week I returned from my mecca in the desert, Coachella. This was my 2nd year attending as the people were beautiful, the weather was blazin, and the music was blissful. With such a loaded lineup, it’s impossible to see every artist you want to catch, as I missed plenty of good acts due to time conflicts or the stage I was at, but here are the sets I was able to catch a good portion of:

FriWarpaint, Cee-Lo Green, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, A-Trak, Afrojack, Cold War Kids, Brandon Flowers, Interpol, The Black Keys, Sasha, & The Chemical Brothers

Sat Freelance Whales, Foals, Joachim Garraud, Chuckie, Cage the Elephant, Yelle, Bright Eyes, The Swell Season, Mumford & Sons, Fedde le Grand, Steve Angello, Empire of the Sun, Arcade Fire

SunJack’s Mannequin, City & Colour, Angus & Julia Stone, Jimmy Eat World, Nas & Damian Marley, Foster the People, Ratatat, The Strokes, Leftfield & Kanye West

If you have the funds or the time to make it next year, I can’t recommend it enough. I set high expectations for the festival each year and the festival  has surpassed them every time. Here is a bunch of video highlights put together by JamBase – Coachella Highlights

Below is a mixtape of songs I enjoyed the most at the festival. Hopefully these tracks can already generate a flashback to those who were there. I’m assuming you’ve heard most of these tracks by now but just in case you haven’t. . .

Gimme the microphone first, so I can bust like a bubble
Compton and Long Beach together, now you know you in trouble… – Snoop Dogg

Every time I hear Nothing But A G Thing I can’t help but to be amazed at just how in the zone Snoop was back in the day. I mean there’s enough style in that record to propel an entire genre to greatness ; ) Ok so this song has nothing to do with Compton, Snoop Dogg or Dre but the Cold War Kids are from Long Beach and that’s enough to make me think of the party classic. We posted the Passion Pit remix back in January but this version deserves it’s own attention. Yeasayer killed this remix, slowing things down to harness the songs message of good hearted generosity. The Passion Pit version will get your going, this one will calm you down and get your thinking. It’s all about balance, enjoy.

How far must I go to gain respect?
Umm well, its kind of simple, just remain your own
Or youll be crazy sad and alone.
Industry rule number four thousand and eighty,
Record company people are shadyyy!! – Tribe Called Quest (Check The Rhime)

I’ve been in the music industry for a long time now and it seems like every 4 or 5 months theres something strange going on when people lose sight of their plans in the face of opportunism. It use to bother me knowing that I worked in a world where no one trust each other and people only have honor loyalty through contracts. That was the old me though, I no longer let any of that bother me because it’s simply about protecting yourself.

You see there are three types of people in the music business. People who care about art and want to make great music, people who want to make money and those who just want to be famous. There are however hybrid types who value all three but just be wary of the extremists. When it comes down to the wire those cats will act on their obsessions and destroy all in their path to get it. This may sound discouraging but if your trying to come up in the business its very difficult to avoid these people so just remember to protect yourself. You don’t have to think about it too much, that’s no good because it will take away from your creativity and affect the vibe but just outline your interest, be strong about it and don’t let people take credit for your work.

At the end of the day, no one who plays dirty gets away with it and they do pay the price in one way or another. I’m posting this song today because I don’t play in that game and when it comes to my close friends we’re coming up together regardless of the circus around us…

So if ya heart stop beatin’ I’ll go back in time
Make your heart beat again real ni*&@s till the end
We try to succeed ni$&@s smoke weed
Contemplated, dedicated
To real ni#*@ that could relate it…” – CNN (Live On Live On)

I’ve known some of the people I work with for over 15 years and its always been about the music, nothing else. I’ve been very fortunate to receive love and help from honest people who don’t expect anything in return and that’s what it’s about. It takes a while to understand the impact that has on you but in the end it changes your approach and I’m grateful for it because loyalty is hard to come by these days, so hard that sometime you can’t even recognize when you have it…

What is mine is yours…”
