Superhuman Happiness + Cults – Um Canto De Afoxé Para O Bloco Do Ilê

The thing about this track is it perfectly captures what it feels like to be a carefree little kid. Two gently plucked guitars (and maybe a synth in there? I’m not sure) start the track off. The other voices come in one at a time – chimes, handclaps, the pulse of some electronic texture, and then Cults’ Madeline Follin’s vocals begin to some emotional heft. As soon as there’s something to latch onto, something as abstract as some portugese lyrics sung in an unembellished lilt, the shakers come in. By the time the horns make their entrance, you already know it’s a party.

It’s easy to get swallowed up by this. The song is rhythmically dense, with a couple of different patters getting laid out in the mix. The interplay in the different parts means there are little weird undercurrents, moments of uncertainty that provide a necessary contrast to the surface level sunshine. This is the kind of song where it’s hard to even latch onto anything and that’s the point and its so refreshing to get lost in a song like this and you don’t have to think and the little tweaks in the sound make keep it interesting and you find yourself smiling and you’re not quite sure why.

Maybe you’re flailing arms and other limbs, circling the roaring campfire on the beach just above the high tide line while the stars and moon look on. Maybe you’ve just stepped out into the light of the day and you weren’t expecting it to look this beautiful. Maybe you’re just happy to be alive. It’s that kind of buzz that I’m getting from Um Canto De Afoxé Para O Bloco Do Ilê and it’s hard not to want a hit of that.

Cults – Bad Things (Alex Young Remix)

Well I must say that this track took me by surprise. I don’t know whether it’s this subtle waning hangover or the unexpected trap-shake in this song, but whatever it was it worked. I’ve had this on repeat all morning and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Snow is melting outside my window and the weather is bitterly cold, and I have a considerable amount of laundry to do today, but that can all wait because I want to rock out to this song just a little bit more.

This is a track that snatches you up, grips you, and then slowly but assertively lets you go. At first I thought this was a Lana del Rey song in disguise – the ambient opening is just waiting for her distinctive croon to massage it. Then Alex Young brings in a beat, some clicks, and the track’s original killer piano chord hits. Madeline Follin’s girlish airy spoken-sung vocals melt into the soundscape before Young takes us to space. It’s a magical moment in a song when just a melody can bring you up. The come down is just as magical, if not euphoric. It’s here where the whole trap genre is flipped. Instead of a deep minimalist bass boom and lustful tensions and releases, Young spins the trap through the cosmos by letting the piano do the basses work and the synths bounce through time. It’s not dark nor is it heavy. It’s trap for the light-hearted. Trap for the chill minded. Chill-trap? Chill-trap. I plan on staying in its grips all afternoon.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 b by Ryan Radler

That’s right fools, it’s Monday, you’re up early for work, you already want to go home and Friday is no where in sight. You went from cold beers at a beach to hot coffee in a cubicle, it’s the roughest of times indeed. But cheer up old chap!, we’ve got the antidote for anything remotely lame so say hello to the anti-work, anti-monday experience – Ryan Radler’s S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 b.

Last week we introduced you to Radler’s fine wine of a mix tape and we all fell in love. Today we’re doing it all over again with another fantastic tape sure to put some swing in those M word blues. There’s so much I can say about these tapes, I don’t even know where to start. There’s the amazing art work, with all it’s nuance and detail perfectly complimenting the sound of the tape. I’m an absolute nerd for detail and quality and after talking to Ryan about his approach it’s no surprise we would cross paths…

Artwork: I have a penchant for retro/vintage design/fashion/art. If I had it my way, I would be perpetually living back in the 60’s and 70’s. The images I have collected and treated are there to match up the audio with a visual of how I see summer. You may notice a bit of a theme with the mirrored effect. I personally have been a big fan of symmetry and asymmetrical balance… “

Yeah this is a mix tape but soon you’ll see that this labor of love is more like a timeless collectors series, you gotta love it. Last weeks tape was one of the most popular post in recent EMPT history and after listening to 1b on repeat for the last two days I suspect nothing less for this one. Like I said before, this is hands down the best summer mix tape you will find anywhere on the internet, we’re happy to presenting it and can’t wait to bring you another next week. Go check out the mastermind behind this on his Facebook page, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Avril 2011

I got an email from one of our readers telling me about a site that flat out ripped off the entire EMPT style, I mean we’re talking a straight bite here. I have no problem with people borrowing from us but completely stealing our names, concepts and vibe doesn’t make any sense to me. EMPT is a complete reflection of me and my friends and I won’t sit here and watch people pose as us –

You gotta see what I’ve seen, look where I’ve looked
Touch what I’ve reached, and take what I’ve took
You gotta go where I’ve gone, walked where I’ve walked
To get where I’m at to speak what I talk… – Beanie Sigel (The Truth)

I won’t say much about this but be yourself dude, think of your own ideas – if you want to use our stuff ask us and we’ll collaborate but don’t flat out steal, we love you but that’s just corny. We put a lot of heart into EMPT and that’s something you can’t duplicate. Take the time to do the same thing and it will get your site a lot further because in the end –

Biters can’t come near…” – Nas (Halftime, Illmatic)

Anyways, I’m a little taken by this so I’ll let Steph introduce yet another wonderful installment and my favorite mixtape in the entire world –

I’ve been lucky to have traveled a bit lately and had a lot of time to walk and just think and listen to both new and old. There’s a lot of electro-inspired tracks in this mix, but on the slower side of things- tracks I’ve listened to in my recent trips to Paris and London, walking alongside the grey skies and dim-colored collages. This isn’t a fast mix, it’s a much slower ride, getting ready for spring. It’s not quite here yet, but its coming…”

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Janvier 2011

I’ve gotten a few email and seen a couple of comments from people asking why we didn’t do a best of 2010 list. Steph finally sent me an answer to that question in the form of a mixtape because we no speak best of 2010 list, we speak music over here. We’re getting a lot of new visitors these days so if you’re not familiar with LMDM I couldn’t think of a better way to get acquainted with the queen of style.

Steph was hitting home runs in 2010, brining us something completely fresh and new for 12 months straight. I’m certainly the biggest LMDM fan and if anyone thinks different we can take this outside and see whose boss! Seriously though, I think I speak for all fans in saying that we appreciate the work Steph puts into these tapes. There’s no question in my mind that LMDM is a labor of love, there’s so much thought and feeling put into it and it translates to everyone that hears it. We appreciate it Steph and look forward to another year of magic…

Yes, this is about mid month 15ish days late…but still, its here. The list below is a special mix for the New Year/wrap-up of the beloved 2010. Instead of choosing my favorite tracks of 2010, I chose  special tracks and artists I featured throughout Le Miel du Mois’ this past year. Most blogs did their ‘best of ‘lists and I think a lot of us agree on what was amazing and what stood out, so rather than echo a round-up list, we thought we would do it a bit different – with a LMDM montage for you to download and here we are…
