So I actually saw Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros in concert (totally by chance at the last minute, which is the best way to go into a concert), and I feel like this post is only appropriate because it’s the remix track I’ve been waiting for for these guys. I can tell you that the the live experience of ES&MZ is exactly what you’d imagine: free, fun, and loving. There’s so much love. And there’s a lot of people on stage, as you may already know. I’m pretty sure I counted ten, but I also think that number fluctuates with every concert. That’s just how it is with them.
This track is sweet and simple and another one to add to the summer playlist. It kind of makes you feel like you want to gather all of your friends in a circle and dance with your arms/legs flailing. But it’s also got the mellow sensual touch of an afternoon at Bonnaroo chillin’ with the homies on a Mexican blanket. (Yes, I wish I was going to Bonnaroo. It’s fine.)
Anyways, the song is off their sophomore album which you can buy on iTunes. It’s worth listening to, especially at this time of year. They’ve always been a summer band to me, especially with their outdoors feel. I think the best atmosphere to see them in concert is probably outdoors too, with the sun slightly burning your shoulders because you forgot to prepare. But you don’t have a care in the world because your hands are just up in the air and you’re swaying from side to side and your sunglasses are sliding off your nose because you’re starting to sweat and it’s summer.
This remix is really beautiful to me too because while it probably doesn’t intend to sound ’80s, it does a little. Edward Sharpe’s distant-sounding voice paired with a choir during the chorus and the echoes of his female counterpart towards the end of the song make it feel like an ’80s movie anthem. I say this in the best way possible, you guys. The ’80s were a great time for the arts and I truly feel that a song that embodies any sort of ’80s quality is one to love.
