El Perro Del Mar – I Carry the Fire

el_perro

A few months ago, El Perro Del Mar released her fifth dazzling studio album Pale Fire. In fact, I wrote about the title track, and its effortless beauty and detailed construction. I Carry the Fire is another stunning work designed around varying levels of a sound experience. Sarah Assbring‘s delicate vocals, a stirring bass guitar riff, an ethereal choir – the result puts the listener directly at the center, spinning, attempting to find the source.

One slip with the ice on the ground
No need for nothing else
No sleep with my eyes on the ground
There was enough to believe in.”

The track has left me wondering of the album’s inspiration. After all, the Swede has been nominated for Best Album, Best Pop and Best Producer for the Swedish Grammys in February. Her work has evolved quite rapidly, and her nomination for Best Producer is clearly a result of her drive. I can’t help but wonder if she took any inspiration from Vladimir Nabokov‘s novel Pale Fire. As a bibliophile, I can only hope that Assbring took some vision from the author, if not some poetic flare. I’ll leave you with this excerpt from Nabokov’s Pale Fire and let you be the judge.

All colors made me happy: even gray.
My eyes were such that literally they
Took photographs. Whenever I’d permit,
Or, with a silent shiver, order it”

El Perro Del Mar – Pale Fire

Never grow tired of this pale, pale fire
Never get out of this pale, pale fire.”

The concept of layering is a relatively simple one, but the results can be remarkable. Disassembling the pieces makes a track seem so comparatively different and complicated. Pale Fire opens with a melancholic heraldry of horns. El Perro Del Mar‘s mournful vocals roll in with embracing comfort. An echoing snare completes the introduction of a swirling synth experience. Sarah Assbring, the sole member of El Perro del Mar,  is now five albums deep in her construction of electro/pop universes. She continues to push her music forward, evolving immensely from her indie pop beginnings. Pale Fire is the title track of her latest and greatest work.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 b by Ryan Radler

That’s right fools, it’s Monday, you’re up early for work, you already want to go home and Friday is no where in sight. You went from cold beers at a beach to hot coffee in a cubicle, it’s the roughest of times indeed. But cheer up old chap!, we’ve got the antidote for anything remotely lame so say hello to the anti-work, anti-monday experience – Ryan Radler’s S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 b.

Last week we introduced you to Radler’s fine wine of a mix tape and we all fell in love. Today we’re doing it all over again with another fantastic tape sure to put some swing in those M word blues. There’s so much I can say about these tapes, I don’t even know where to start. There’s the amazing art work, with all it’s nuance and detail perfectly complimenting the sound of the tape. I’m an absolute nerd for detail and quality and after talking to Ryan about his approach it’s no surprise we would cross paths…

Artwork: I have a penchant for retro/vintage design/fashion/art. If I had it my way, I would be perpetually living back in the 60’s and 70’s. The images I have collected and treated are there to match up the audio with a visual of how I see summer. You may notice a bit of a theme with the mirrored effect. I personally have been a big fan of symmetry and asymmetrical balance… “

Yeah this is a mix tape but soon you’ll see that this labor of love is more like a timeless collectors series, you gotta love it. Last weeks tape was one of the most popular post in recent EMPT history and after listening to 1b on repeat for the last two days I suspect nothing less for this one. Like I said before, this is hands down the best summer mix tape you will find anywhere on the internet, we’re happy to presenting it and can’t wait to bring you another next week. Go check out the mastermind behind this on his Facebook page, enjoy.

El Perro Del Mar – Change of Heart

A lot of my friends are moving out to LA and I can’t understand why. I considered it a few months back when my boy Michael Smith was putting me on to some opportunities out there but I realized how much I needed that New York beat around me and that idea quickly fell through. One place I would consider moving to is Sweden, simply because 75% of the new artists that instantly grab my attention seem to be coming from the kingdom. Sarah Assbring aka El Perro Del Mar released an EP last year called Love Is Not Pop that I’ve been meaning to talk about but never got around to.

A light in the darkness
Been dreaming for so long
Searching for a witness
or means to carry on
Sweet talk for hours
’bout things we’re gonna’ do
And sometimes I lose track of my heart
But this could never work out oh ohh”

This song is about bittersweet heartbreak and Sarah’s lush voice brings those lyrics to life in a way very similar to fellow Swedish star Lykke Li. Cheesy love songs can make me cringe sometimes but the version of love Lykke Li and Sarah put out is a little more in tune with the reality I live so I make sure to listen well. The production on the track is fantastic, borrowing it’s feeling from the 80’s but managing to sound remarkably new at the same time. Alright, I’ve got a session waiting but I had to share my Monday mood beforehand, enjoy.
