Grimes – Go (Feat. Blood Diamonds)

GO. That’s been the requisite action for me in the last 3 weeks.  It’s been LA to NYC, NYC to Kennebunkport, Kennebunkport to NYC and finally NYC to LA. Every stop literally filled with life changing events, revelations, realizations, missteps, mishaps and a fair share of mischief. Prior to my travels I’d been putting a lot of attention on my diet, getting in touch my thoughts and clearing my mind so during my travels I was well aware of everything that was going on in a way I’d never experienced before. Meaning there are times when we’re in the thick of it and only in hindsight do we truly understand what transpired.

We’re essentially slaves to our environment, temptation and influence and usually gain back control when it’s too late. That said, it’s interesting when the mind is clear and you have control. Suddenly what you’ve let slide in the past becomes immediately apparent and like playing a video game you decide to go left instead of right. When opportunity knocks you have to power to turn up and take advantage. When lust, temptation and romance is breathing down your neck you give it all you have . Essentially, when you focus on clearing your mind and body of the poisons related to the modern-day industrial food complex you become human again and you get the power to GO. How do you know your missing something you never know you had? The poisons are invisible, slow killers so we have to experiment with ourselves. Take a month and see what it’s like to not eat processed foods. See what that does to your mind and appetite for life. Get out of the pattern the yields the exact same results you know day in and day out and seek that 1 to 2% improvemnet. The results might shock you.

Dreams, they feel like memories when I dream of you
Time won’t stay, it’ll stretch itself out from a minute to days
And I’d like to think that we don’t dream to win it all
‘Cos I’ve been here…

I look at who I was before I started caring about these things and I can’t even recognize that person anymore. The worst feeling you can have is being in a shitty situation, knowing exactly how you got there and worst of all having been there before. Our ability to GO when life calls for it is the difference. That’s the difference between letting go of the bad things and getting to the new.

This isn’t the mid-twentieth century anymore when you have doctors advertising cigarettes or or saying that baby formula is better than breast milk for little kids. We’re in the Space Age and because of technology and science we know more about what makes humans GO then ever. If you’re feeling crappy because it’s Monday, I suggest you look into these things because the solutions and the power to change ourselves is in our hands. A huge portion of it is diet and exercise, that simple. Anyone who wants specific reading material send us an email, enjoy.

Metal Mother – Mind_Off

Mus_metalmother-590x885

According to Metal Mother’s Facebook page, band interests include “Transdimentional pursuits, psychic collaboration, risky business, nature, machines, mutant lyfe.”

Her (Oakland-based Taara Tati) video for “Mind_Off” will help you picture exactly what those interests entail. Disintegrating baby sumo wrestlers? Check. A cracked out Jell-O feast? Also in there. The track is off Metal Mother’s debut album, IONIKA, which sounds like Grimes at Burning Man. Tati’s high-pitched voice, commanding yet friendly, preaches alien sermons over a variety of convoluted, beat driven instrumental tracks.

Metal Mother is part of the “Post Primal Collective,” a bay area group of artists who seem intent on exploring every fucked up and awesome corner of the human consciousness. Their output doesn’t seem aimed at making it big at all, and rather at collaborating and performing for arts sake. I can only imagine what one of their parties would be like.

As a generation of jobless intellectuals and artists collide with the reality of urban rent, I expect many such experimental collectives to gain prominence in the coming years. Thank god. Often, these groups produce the most cutting edge work and truly drive cultural narritaves without meaning to. They are wellsprings of inspiration, affecting every person who stumbles across their work. Whether you like Japanese wood block-style S&M portraits or not, they’re likely to stick in your brain for a while.

I feel the same way about “Mind_Off.” Nothing groundbreaking here, but rather an extension on a theme, a successor to Fever Ray in some ways. This song finds its way to the back of your brain, and flickers to life as the lights dim, its haunting drums leading you into a darker dream than you may have expected.

Grimes – Oblivion (DjSliink Remix)

If you don’t know who Claire Boucher is I only have one question for you: where have you been? I have to confess that I wasn’t all hyped on Grimes when she first popped up on the internet. It’s not that I deplored her music, I just was never in a mood to listen to her. She seemed like an acquired taste. But like all acquired tastes, Grimes became a semi girl crush once my tastebuds adapted to her sound. Her aesthetic kept me interested and watching while over the past few months her music has seeped itself into my system and now I’ve fully digested it. I don’t know what it is about it, but whatever she’s doing I’m digging. The whole electo-elf thing works for me and gets me good. Her 2012 release, Visions, is electro-nymph opulence that makes me bust out an odd dance (imagine Florence Welch voguing and there I am).

If you haven’t acquired the Grimes taste yet, I’m here tonight with New Jersey producer DjSliink’s bass heavy remix to “Oblivion”. I recently came across Sliink while perusing the internet for casual remixes. One click led to another and here I am spreading the sounds to you. He slows down the track’s main melody and explodes the syncopation. Boucher’s vocals hover in and out of the Herbie Hancock inspired record scratches as layers of Boucher’s original production build and build into a mellow drop. It’s a smooth dark beat that leaves you coasting for a while when the track ends.

If Grimes isn’t your thing, the remixes that have come from her work are dope. I have this odd sense that people either love her or hate her. It’s always a “Hold on! I have an opinion about Grimes!” Rarely do I meet someone who simply appreciates her work. Her tracks, like this one, are layered with youthful recklessness and an odd sense of consciousness. She’s intelligent, no doubt and hides it behind her production forcing us – the listener – to really listen to what she’s saying. I didn’t realize this until I began listening to the remixes and questioning why the producer decided to keep this verse and remove that one, etc. etc. Before I was merely hearing Grimes, I’m here encouraging y’all to listen. Like her or not, this track’ll get your Friday started off right. Heavy mellow beats that’ll keep you up and gliding into the night.

Cheers.

Blood Diamonds Ft. Grimes – Phone Sex (Unicorn Kid Remix)

Perfect track to get your Friday heated up quickly!  This is yet another track I have had on repeat, I have a real long time love for house beats and sick remixes, and the bass couldn’t be more infectious on this track.  Just the right amount of sweet vocals but not too much because this is the type of track that can stand alone with all it’s radiating affects.  The production for me is unreal, when a track with all its magic can suck you in and make you feel like you are in another world, I think that’s something to brag about!

Blood Diamonds, aka Michael Diamond, is a Los Angeles-based pop artist best known for his luxurious dreamscapes and infectious, sun-dipped production.”

“Sun-dipped production”, I couldn’t have said it better myself and that is why I will be bumping this all weekend sitting by the pool, BBQing and enjoying good friends company out in the California sunshine…Absolute Bliss!

Speaking of bliss, I hadn’t heard of Unicorn Kid before but I was very intrigued by his remix of the original and had to find out something about him.  Oliver Sabin is his real name and the kid is only 20 years old from Edinburg and already composing killer electronic music.

When asked about the name of the act, Sabin states ‘There’s no real story behind the name, it just kind of came about and fitted in with the fun, magical nature of the music.‘ “

Enjoy this beautiful weekend and make this your jam for the next couple days!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Avril 2012

t w e n t y o n e songs of Le Miel du Mois! What the f%*k is a Monday blues?

Steph is back with this installment of LMDM and it’s another wonderfully eclectic blend of everything you didn’t even know you loved. Stephs all-embracing approach to music is one of the reasons why LMDM has been and continues to be one of the most interesting mix tapes on any side of the globe. I don’t know about you but I get bored quick fast listening to the same music or style over and over. Musical monogamy is not a concept I can get behind. Our minds are capable of processing anything we throw at it so to limit yourself to just one style of expression or one type of artist is a crime of the highest order. Thankfully, once a month Steph delivers like that perfect lover everyone dreams of – unpredictable, surprising, interesting, risky and totally in tune with your wants and desires at the moment without you having to say a word. Gotta love it.

I have listened to Youth Lagoon on repeat more times than you should really repeat anything in one hour/day/week/month. Same for The Drums,  who are playing in New York this Sunday if you are in NY, go. Other monthly obsessions include the sun and no-reason car rides so I can listen to whatever I’m listening to (probably Youth Lagoon) longer before having to go inside. And here we go…

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Fevrier et Mars 2012

It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here. LMDM is back and the beloved mixtape is as my greatest inspiration would put it, insanely great. Per usual Steph captures a multitude of feelings, emotions and styles sure to keep the worst of music skimmers engaged and entertained. All the selections come together to portray a sort melancholic hope that instigates both thoughts of lost loves and desired passions. Great art always explores both coast, it always makes you think of the sad while inspiring the beautiful. LMDM is great art to me and throughout this unique combination of February & March that’s exactly what happens.

Born & raised on EMPT, Le Miel du Mois has become one of our most special and cherished offerings. Press play on this one, you won’t regret it.

The latest mixtape is a ‘Fevrier et Mars’ combination, since I was back and forth London/New York the last 7 months, I had to combine these two in one. The opening track and closing track to the LMDM’s are probably the ones I spend most time on, making sure they fit in opening/closing, so I hope you’ll find it right to fit your own close to March. Favorite artists I’m listening to right now are the latest from Youth Lagoon, Grimes, Tennis, Summer Camp, Breton and Beach Fossils. Also love what I’ve heard so far from Lefse Records new artist, Way Yes. Excited for more and for those that went to sxsw, tell us what some of your favorite artists you discovered there were.Want to hear about the new miels.
