EMPT Presents — S U M M E R: a n t i – w i n t e r 1 e by Ryan Radler

artworks-000050754382-kn684i-t500x500

Whether we like it or not, a new month approaches like a long lost relative, familiar out of necessity but still foreign with the possibilities that it brings. August is one of my favorite months of the year, and in the summer, because it’s absent of annoying holidays and tedious celebrations that all really commemorate the same things. Not to be cynical or anything, I’m really not, it’s just that my brother is born in August, and Ramadan for the past couple of years has ended in August, which makes it a really spiritually happy month. It also makes the start of September feel like a new year, which puts me in a clear head space, prepared for the remaining months in 2013.

For this month, my musical selection and soundtrack to my everyday routine has been picky. More picky than usual, actually. I want something that speaks to the end of a beautiful nostalgic time, while simultaneously fueling my energetic brain for the ambitious future that lies ahead. Which is why I was pleased to hear this edition of Ryan Radler’s beloved mixtape series. I think something that we like to talk about, and something that I am always aware of, is the power of a well crafted, finely curated mix-tape. While we tend to love mix-tapes that tell a story, I have a vast appreciation for those that successfully transition in and out of songs in a way that matches the flux and wavelike movement of my moods. I think I listen to mix-tapes because I want the feeling of letting go and allowing something else to take hold of my emotions, while not consciously doing so.

What I love about this edition of S U M M E R is the nostalgia and innocence that strings each song together. The vocal samples are what inspire my feelings of nostalgia. Innocent, because the emotion that each selection of song brings is raw and unabashed. It’s telling me to forget about my troubles for an hour and do good by me.

I’m doing just that. Today, just do you. Every day, really. But especially today while you embark on this journey of a mix.

Kisses – Funny Heartbeat

KissesMidnight Lover (Ultra City Dub) which clocks at a little over 9 minutes was one of the -if not- the biggest releases of 2011. It hit me so hard and bad that the year ended and nothing came close to it. I’m not sure they released any original material for at least two years and this first single off their upcoming new album finds them treading their usual waters but you can sense them swimming in a slightly different direction.

It’s as disco-dance infused as we’d expect from Kisses yet one can feel a lot more confidence out of Jesse Kivel’s voice upon hearing Funny Heartbeat’s lyrics.

“All the nights we slept alone
I lost my cell phone
And now I miss you
I’m feeling the pulse of this
Funny Heartbeat
Gonna do it again
This funny heartbeat
Ohh ohh ohh.”

The true magic of these Kisses songs is not necessarily within the lyrics themselves but you can experience it when you hear their songs with your eyes closed. Try it. They actually have this power to transport you. In this case you can’t help but feel the sun-drenched beach air moving the palms on the trees while drinking a Bloody Caesar (not a Bloody Mary, that would be too ordinary). And when you open your eyes again, your reality just feels a tad better.

It’s quite difficult to make someone believe us when we utter a phrase like this one:

“All the things I’ve said before are true and over-said.” Yet it doesn’t make it any less true.

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 2 a by Ryan Radler

Ethereal – extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world. Press play on Ryan Radlers latest mix tape and that’s exactly how the music will make you feel, immediately. The effect is no coincidence and if you’re hip to the anti-summer/anti-winter concepts then you know that’s what these tapes are all about…

At the end of the day I think the mixes are really about how to navigate each season. Personally, winter has been killing me and this mix is literally some catharsis to cope with the stuff that comes. Cold, depression, lethargic lack of motivation…

I love finding alternative perspective to seemingly crappy situations so Ryans and I see eye to eye on anti-lameness methods. Listening to this tape while reading that makes me think of all type of reality alteration; if you haven’t noticed by now I’m big into Steve Jobs and if you’ve read Walter Isaacson’s book you’ll know all about Steve’s reality distortion field. At it’s most fundamental level it was a complete neglect and disrespect for any know limits, boundaries and expectations. Dig a little deeper and it was Steves ultimate tool for creativity…

Reality is maleable, we should all know that but we don’t. There’s no such thing as the “real world,” the only thing that exists is what we decide to bring into fruition. That may seem far fetched but think about it, if you’re feeling down one day and you put on your favorite song to cheer you up and it works then you’re effectively changing your “reality.” That’s why the world, it’s art, it’s people, customs, morals and standard are constantly changing. The concept runs deep, I mean just think about the things you don’t do because of what you have come to accept as possible in your life.

In the case of a n t i – s u m m e r  2 a rebellion never sounded so good. Talk about reality distortion, this hazy dream of a mixtape make the world feel like heaven as it effortlessly jumps from genre to genre, decade to decade and known to unknown. There are mixtapes all over the place but you’d be hard pressed to find two as unique and inspiring as Steph’s and Ryans and I think I speak on behalf of the entire EMPT army when I say how thankful we are to have these great artist bless us with their selections. Alright, I have to go face this bitter sunshine filled LA winter, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2A by Ryan Radler

Last week we experienced some major player hating from The Man that eventually led to a subpar release of anti-winter 3A. If you haven’t heard or downloaded that one yet check out last weeks post here and spread the word, the kid Ryan Radler is bringing nothing but heat and something that good should not be left unknown. We’ve had many set backs with The Industry & it’s minions in our day but every time we come back swinging even harder and this time it’s no different. We’re 4 weeks and running with exclusive releases of the absolute best summer mixtape series on the web and we couldn’t be more excited about it. When we’re done with the anti-winter series I’m going to do a post featuring all of them so you guys can see just what this guy is doing here. From the custom artwork to the limitless sounds, these tapes are bleeding style and we can’t take ’em for granted…

I ended up spending the entire winter of 2011 developing all my mixes. Cold, blustery weekends you could find me snug in my loft researching and archiving the songs that I would then throw into Logic Pro for the fine-tuning mix sessions. In a cathartic twist, projecting myself into the Summer through the mixes actually made me forget the void left after the January heat wave in LA. I have channeled my “yearning for Summer” through these mixes and now, after many months, we have finally arrived!

We like to use music around these parts for all sorts of healing so that philosophy is right up our alley. Is it just me or does that blonde have really nice hair? Alright, I’m gonna go get all my work done to this fantastic soundtrack, you should do the same. Enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Octobre 2010

Well it seems like the bigger this blog gets the more it becomes a target… The latest battle in the war between EMPT & The Industry is by far the most entertaining and while I can’t got into detail for legal reasons let’s just say I’ll be making some changes to the way music is played on this site to meet the establishment halfway, whatever. To all the creative people out there, don’t hold on to your ideas so tight that no one hears about it but make sure you have bulletproof protection cause greedy and lazy people will do whatever it takes to get a piece of your pie.

That said, listening to this months installment of Le Miel du Mois was a therapeutic experience. First of all, this tape is ridiculously good. I mean the way the music fits the mood of the city and the fall season right now is beyond words.

You crazy for this one Rick (Steph)! – Jay-Z (99 Problems)

Once again Steph drops a mixtape so unique in vibe and style that you have to immediately regard it as your favorite. I think the reason for that is how in tune they are with the general feeling of the times which is quite fresh and might I add not very easy to do. Alright, I’m actually going to go run this tape back for the 3rd time this morning. I can’t get enough, enjoy…

CMJ is the third week in October in New York City. forthebeat is putting on a show October 20th with Transparent and ABC News Amplified. EMPT will also be a part of the night, and we’re all really excited about our line-up. More details on that next week. This month’s mix includes new releases from some of my favorite new artists including Home Video, Kisses, Summer Camp and Wise Blood. Another special track on this mix is newcomers Aux Arc from Savannah, GA. Look out for their first EP later this year, tentatively titled “It’s Hard Swallowing A Novelty.”

Kisses – People Can Do The Most Amazing Things

With so much drama in the L-B-C
It’s kinda hard bein Snoop D-O-double-G
But I, somehow, some way
Keep comin up with funky ass shit like every single day…” – Snoop Doggy Dogg (1993, Doggystyle)

I turned on my computer this morning and the first song I saw with Kisses’ People Do The Most Amazing Things. I pressed play and man this song couldn’t be more appropriate for my current events in NYC.

I’ve got to get it out, I never wanted to fight…”

I tell you man, knowing what you want is a gift and a curse. It’s a gift because having direction and purpose helps you wake up in the morning without feeling like theres nothing to do. It’s a curse because you’re so focused on those goals that you lose your ability to entertain anything that takes you off course.

And it’s hard to know what you want, cause it’s hard to say what you can…”

I’ve gotten so caught up in my ambition over these last few years that I’ve literally lost ability to be distracted. I believe in the laws of attraction so much that I try to stay away from anything negative to the point where it might seem like I don’t care to people, but it’s not the case. I apologize to all the people around me who have things going on, or who’ve wanted a little more from me on the personal side, I’m not trying to diss you guys…

Things have been so crazy and hectic, I should’a gotten back by now.
But you know how much I wanted to make it,  It’s probably better anyhow.
So if you gotta go, If there’s anything I should know.
If the spotlight makes you nervous, if your looking for a purpose.
I remember when you thought I was joking, now I’m all singing karaoke further than I’ve ever been…
– Drake (Karaoke)

I’ve been in show business since the 3rd grade, I’m addicted to the game, I need to put on a show like I need to breath. My apologies to those who try to argue with me and get the blank wall, I’m not fighting anyone. Life is to short and I’m determined to spend every single moment of it on the upside so sorry to disappoint. Time should be spent doing things…

I was only trying to get ahead, I was only tying to get ahead,
But the spotlight makes you nervous…

Anyways, I had to post the Drake song after using half of the lyrics for this post, enjoy

Kisses – Bermuda

I was at a random Grammy party a few weeks ago and I met a very cute girl who was telling to check out a band called Kisses, she knew about this site and said all the Space Age kids would love. I told her I would make sure to check them out  but I was a few Cognacs in so of course when I came back to NYC I completely forgot about the girl and the music. Yesterday she sent me an email asking why I hadn’t called her back and more importantly why I hadn’t talked about Kisses of yet. Well, I took a listen to the band and here I am posting, it’s hard to resist a P.Y.T. with good taste. Aside from their amazing music, I don’t know anything about this band, they seem to be totally undiscovered but I like everything about them, especially the quote of their website…

Always leave a little to chance.”

I don’t know if it’s out now or when it will be but they have a debut album coming out called The Heart Of Nightlife but if this is any indication of the quality expect these guys to get some hype in the next few months. Space Age Bachelor Pad Music at it’s best, enjoy.
