Mayer Hawthorne – Designer Drug

Mayer+Hawthorne

Last night I tried a little Adderall.
It was working for a while
until I thought about your smile.
I got that fire Cali medical,
but it never gets me high.
Baby only you know why,
‘Cause darling
You, you are
my designer drug,
and only you
aan help me,
and I can’t get enough.”

The first time I heard Hawthorne spit out the first lyrics to this track in his effortless falsetto, I clapped my hands and yelled, “Yes!” The frankness of this whole track is infectious. Everything from the funky soul beat to the running bass line, and of course Hawthorne’s tongue and cheek story. There’s some seriously good vibes pulsing through this track. It’s like the music is getting lifted by its own sound, and we’re just getting contact high. Tracks with as much groove as this often rely on nostalgia for that extra oomph, but Hawthorne uses his inspiration wisely. He doesn’t appropriate or rip-off his musings, he takes their precedent and makes something completely his own. He’s a creator in the truest sense.

I read an article yesterday about that very idea and it’s presence in pop music today. The article focused on Beyoncé, a polarizing artist if there ever was any, and how she’s more of a canvas than creator. It made some solid points and references the blatant inspiration rip-off’s she’s done for videos like “Countdown,” “Single Ladies,” and “Get Me Bodied.” Now, don’t get me wrong here. I’m apart of the Beyhive, my friends and I sat at our computers each morning of the Mrs. Carter World Tour presale tickets (only to find they sold out in seconds each time), and I’m living for her latest track snippets. Artistry and entertainment are two different fields, though, and Bey falls into the latter. Which is fine. It’s great, in fact. We need personalities and performers like her to showcase brilliant choreography and imagery that would have otherwise gone unknown in the underground. That’s what pop is for. We also need to consider musicians like Mayer Hawthorne, too. They’re work is the original stuff that will undoubtedly provide the ballast for future pop.  You just so happen to be in the know and can point out his influence when you hear something on the radio in the months ahead. You’re here because you’re a creator in your own right and believe in taking what’s been done and spinning it all your own. You get high off of making things, learning, and listening. The mainstream isn’t a bad thing, to be appropriated isn’t a bad thing. It’s an honor, in my opinion.

Anyway, I could go on but this track sums up what I’m trying to say. The lyrics might not, but the sounds and vibrations it’ll send through your body do. That’s the sign of true music artistry, really.

Mayer Hawthorne – No Strings (RAC Remix)

The men of RAC are capable once again of putting us in a happy place. With a some funk infused melodies thanks to Mayer Hawthorne, we have ourselves a tune that keeps up with a constant smile. The subject matter of this song and the melodic elements of funk swim together in an ocean of realness, as we wrap our minds around the idea of Mayer Hawthorne having a one night stand.

I saw you lookin’ at me girl
When I first set foot into the room
You didn’t want me to see girl
You didn’t wanna lay your cards so soon
I see you rollin’ it over
You wonder what your friends might think of you
Angel on your shoulder, but you know just you wanna do

Well I don’t need to know a thing about your past
No I just want one night with you no strings attached
And I know that we might not be a perfect match
I just want one night with you no strings attached.”

While I did not receive this song from a friend, today happened to be a really fantastic day for song sharing. I have to credit my friends and family for most of the stuff that I post about on here (okay, maybe not most of it but a lot), and it’s all because of song-sharing. I believe it was Hayden who once wrote about how much thought goes into sharing a song with another person. I feel really similarly. Not everyone will enjoy the music that I have to share, and I certainly won’t enjoy every song that is sent my way. But for the people who are able to tune into my taste of music and see past the gal who loves to dance to anything that will get her body moving, I am truly grateful. Without the special connection of understanding one another’s musical landscapes and languages, we would be short one significant mode of communication.

Enjoy!

Chromeo – When The Night Falls (Mayer Hawthorne Cover)

One of the standout tracks —if that’s even possible when most if not all of the songs in the album are amazing— in Chromeo’s Business Casual is When The Night Falls. And if this track’s original version wasn’t good enough Mayer Hawthorne gives us his amazing version as a gift and part of the When The Night Falls EP.

At first listen one might be tricked by Mayer Hawthorne’s voice and it is his falsettos beautifully merged with this jazz and pop-laden arrangement that take the groove on this musical piece to a very special place in our hearts and our feet. The way I see it it’s like MH stripped naked WTNF and put a slick suit on its body with funky colored socks on its feet.

This remake has all the trademarks of this Michigan native retro man with its funk and soul injection but make no mistake, this does not mean it doesn’t sound as fresh as it came out of the oven. I think between this fact and what MH accomplishes with his voice is the sweet spot of this joint.

If you find yourself surrounded by a group of friends that heard the original one too many times, hit play and prepare yourself to surprise them in the funkiest most glamorous of manners. Go ahead and sing it one more time:

“Well you probably think I’m a fast-talking romantic
With a high-fallutin’ ways
But it’s all about the impression you made
On the first time I met you
That stayed with me for days
And now I want that feeling back
But I’m not sure where to get it
But you have the answer to that

And you say it’s nothing but fun and games
But over the phone it’s not the same
So let’s try to cross paths

There’s something about you, girl
And it’s rather strange
I want come back to you, girl
And rekindle the flame.”

Get Out There…

Excuse the lack of post this week, I was stuck in the Dominican Republic since Sunday because of Irene so now I’m back in the city playing catchup with my bizz. Anyways, I kept it under wraps but some of yall might have noticed that EMPT was shut down for a good 12 hours last week. Basically, we maxed out our traffic and bandwith limits, again! So once more, I was introduced to some seriously nerdy server system that we have to upgrade to in order to keep this shit afloat. That said, congrats for consuming so much damn music, it cost us a boatload but it makes me extremely happy to see that people are seriously tuning in.

I’ve been out and about more than ever in the last few months and it’s changed my whole outlook on things. Basically, life happens out there, so get out there. The internet makes everything so easy, you don’t have to go to the movie theatre to catch a flick, you don’t have to go outside to catch up with your friends and you can order food while doing that so you don’t have to interrupt your lounging. That’s all fine and dandy but as with all things balance is key so don’t spend your time imitating a life that’s right outside of your door. Technology is amazing but pale in comparison to nature and that mind blowing creations that we are.

Long story short stop looking at this screen and GO OUTSIDE! I’ll leave you with a playlist compliments of the good folks at ShaveUrLegs.com, it’s perfect for this Friday afternoon, enjoy.

Mayer Hawthorne – The Ills

There are certain artists I listen to that completely captivate me through their music, to the point where I have to stop thinking about everything and get lost in the fantasy and stimulation. Curtis Mayfield is one of those artists, I mean some of his songs are charged with a such complex array of emotions, rhythms and textures that you can’t help but feel like an air of divinity is coming through your speakers. Why am I talking about Curtis Mayfield in Mayer Hawthorne post? Well one listen at the percussion and vocal performance on The Ills and you’ll quickly realize Hawthorne applies very good taste when it comes to looking for inspiration.

You know the ills of this world they can get you down
But then we get back up”

To put it simply, this song is about the inevitable ups and downs of life and the process of getting though them. Those of you who read this blog regularly probably know that my favorite word is perspective. Having the ability to momantarily disconnect yourself from a trouble or even a success to see the moment for what it is – passing, is a great skill to practice. Next time you get mad or sad about something just think about the fact that it won’t last. Think about your past hardships, where are those now? The laws of the universe say that the pendulum will always swing back the other way. You can’t stop equilibrium but you can have the understanding that it exists and thus the perspective to rise about letting it rock you at will, that is the way to balance, enjoy.

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anais Nin

Mayer Hawthorne – Thin Moon

Uh oh, I did it again. I made the moon go thin…”

I’m getting pressured to get off of my computer so we can hit the beach but I can’t just leave you guys hanging so here’s a quick one. The weather is amazing here and time seems to be going very slow, it’s nice to get away from the New York minute. I wanted to find a song that fit my mood changing environment and Thin Moon couldn’t be better. I’ve been addicted to Mayer Hawthorne since I heard his bitter sweet love song Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out and I can’t get enough. The “blue-eyed soul” sound has a sophistication and artistic maturity you just don’t get in the mainstream. If the week has gotten to you I would grab a brewski, kick back, gather your thoughts and find the way. The world is responds to you, not the other way around, enjoy…

Neptune is gone from the sky, all that’s left is the hole, I start to cry…”
