Hiatus Kaiyote – Ocelot

hiatuskaiyote

Sometimes a really beautiful and musically talented friend will tell you to listen to a band that they know you’ll love, like really love, and sometimes, you space out and forget to do that for months. And then one day, you re-discover the band on accident and it just happens to be the same week that another really lovely friend tells you that they have an extra ticket for you to go see said band in a sold out show at the Knitting Factory on a Monday night.

I haven’t felt so lucky in a long time.

Hiatus Kaiyote hails from my favorite place that I’ve never been to — Australia. Nai Palm, the exquisite lead singer that I photographed above, stole my heart several times on Monday night, but I would be committing a crime if I said she was solely responsible. The entire band’s on-stage chemistry and truly deep rooted soul tactics boxed my heart far away. I wasn’t even expecting to have my heart stolen this week. Alas.

My friend and I saw an opportunity to get closer to the stage shortly after we entered the packed venue, and as soon as we did, I felt that much more connected. A girl next to me grooved in the same rhythm as me for almost the entire set. A smile slowly crept up on my face and plastered itself there for the rest of the performance. The band brought out a couple of beautifully talented guest singers, who warranted an uproarious response from the crowd. One of the guest appearances was a man from France named Spleen. As he shuffled on stage with his hands held in front of his stomach shyly, Nai Palm asked us to welcome him with the Brooklyn warmth that she knew we had. I had no idea what to expect, and I’m glad because the surprise was incredible. Orchestrated belts and screams came out of this beautiful man’s mouth with the intensity of a punk rocker but the delicacy of a classical musician. He later came out on stage for the encore and proved to be one of the best hype men I’d ever seen, demanding the audience to scream louder and louder. And the encore itself was a magical moment where both the audience and the band were jamming together as one, audience led by the band and instructed to do specific vocals which matched the bands syncopated rhythms.

The band was as in love with the audience as the audience was with them, and at one point in the performance, Nai Palm received the most heartwarming note from an audience member. She read it aloud, and while I can’t remember exactly what it said, the words followed the lines of poetry and warmth. Not only was it a praise for the band, but an expression of love for the music that they put out, begging the musicians to never stop.

Hiatus Kaiyote performed this song, Ocelot, and I think it was my favorite of the set. Coincidentally, it’s my favorite song on the album, and also the shortest. I wish it was longer, but it’s just enough to woo you in love with this band. They’ll be back in November and I urge you all to drop most of the important things you’re doing, and go see them perform live. Buy your tickets early though because they’ll be sold out again, guaranteed.

Wave Machines – The Greatest Escape We Ever Made

Spending every day on our backs blowing clouds across the sky,
Throwing time away ’cause we can, ’cause we’re never going to die,
We could be stars, come out in the dark.”

Monday, monday, monday. Goodbye to another weekend and good morning to a new week. I’ve started to appreciate Mondays. I like the idea of a new start; a fresh week; a chance to (maybe, hopefully!) follow your planner and to-do list perfectly this week. While the hardest part of Monday (well, any day for the matter) is getting out of bed, I’m here this morning with a song that’ll ease you into the day. Whether you’re just listening to this still in bed ’cause you slept with your laptop last night or hitting that afternoon slump, this track makes for the perfect coffee mate.

Let’s rewind back to  2008. The economy was still rockin’ and Britney Spears was just waking up out from her Blackout. I was still trapped in suburbia itching to get out and move to the big city. Those years (between 2007 and 2008) were years of escapism. The emo-scene had Boys Like Girls wailing/screaming/singing(?) on “The Great Escape” in 2007 and the alternative scene had Wave Machines clinking away at a keyboard with this track, “The Greatest Escape We Ever Made.” Personally, I was rocking out to this track over the Boys Like Girls tune, but choose your weapon (no shame here if you choose the latter). The track brings you in with tiny keyboard chords before Tim Bruzon softly coo’s his way through the song’s lyrics. The track feels light enough to be a morning song and has enough movement in the drums to be a late summer road-trip jam. Sonically, the tune feels like it could have come out during the 90’s, early, 00’s, or today. Its got a feel good vibe that’s enhanced by the keyboard and Bruzon’s falsetto.

We haven’t really heard much from Wave Machines since their 2009 album. Rumor is they’ll be releasing a follow-up album this year, but until then we have this lively little 2008 single of theirs to tease us with ideas of escaping just as the reality that summer is over sets in.

CHERUB – Hold Me (feat. Dominic Lalli)

I don’t know about y’all but I don’t have a problem with Mondays. There’s something about waking up and beginning a new week that excites me. Maybe I’m alone in this thought, but I have a real problem with Tuesdays. Personally, Tuesday is a hellish day. Monday has passed – which is great – but when Tuesday comes it’s like eating left-overs knowing that a fresh home-cooked meal is on its way. Tuesday is tease-day in my opinion. It doesn’t carry the cliche baggage Monday carries nor does it have the “YIPEE it’s hump day!” excitement Wednesday holds; it’s just kind of there. I’d rather have Tuesday off than any other day of the week.

That’s where CHERUB comes in. In their track, Hold Me, they sing about living in dream land rather than reality. This is Tuesday for me. I’d much rather dream my way through the second day of the work week than live it, and if someone cute was dreaming next to me than hey! added bonus. This track is the complete Monday night package: mellow with a beat you can sway to. The chorus isn’t a desperate plea to some lover, it’s an honest demand delivered in falsetto.

I don’t wanna wake up
just wanna keep my eyes shut
how long can i sleep with you here right next to me
come live love
dreams as fake as makeup
but who cares if theyre made up
fuck reality, its much better in my sleep
eyes stay shut.”

Really…who can deny that? With a sick keyboard driving the melody and Dominic Lalli telling us to skip the day with him, your Monday night blues may disappear ’cause come tomorrow you’re going where he’s going (hopefully…maybe – don’t call in sick ’cause I don’t want to be held accountable; I’m just serving ya good tunes).

Congrats on getting through Monday and the first weekend of July! Even if you have work tomorrow, you’ll have CHERUB to play when you need an escape and/or dance break.

F*&k reality its much better in my sleep.”

No truer words were ever sung.
