Music Remixes

Night Panther – Snudge (Spaceship Aloha Remix)

I find myself requiring music this week that sets me in a very specific time and space. I am practically begging the universe for a more refined ability to remain mind and body present at once. I would do anything to say that the next eight months are not on my mind, that my plans post graduation are all set in stone, that I have any clue as to what I’ll be doing or where in the world I’ll be. I would love to say that. The reality is that no matter how much I stress about it, no matter how much I feed into everyone else’s anxiety and neuroses about the future, it won’t change my end result. So I’m hoping for the most random and completely fell-from-the-sky outcome. I know that whatever shock it may be, something really incredible is in store, even if it seems uncomfortable at first. Whether that’s a job that requires me to fly across the country or across the world, or a trip to a country I’ve never been to before that steals my heart…or just staying put in Brooklyn and making it work. My openness is constant and quickly evolving.

It comes as no surprise that this song contains all the elements of a solid jam. It’s not too slow and keeps up with the pace of a calm but productive. Its lyrics tell a story, but Spaceship Aloha’s remix gives it a slightly edgier funk while the drums in the background combat looped vocals that don’t quit.

Pulling out your tongue
She’s gonna rip it out
And find news, find news.”

I’m always in need of more songs that tell a story, and furthermore, remixes that combat that tale. I’m all about the duality of music and life in general, the balance. Relate to this song, and perhaps reflect on your own snudges.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Septembre 2012

A person named Hadders (if thats your real name) left this comment on our wall last week and it said…

Hi EMPT, I’ve been following EMPT for the last 2 years and my welfare depends deeply on your LMdM mixes. They’re unbelievable. Can’t wait for the next one and thanks for the music…”

That made my day and it got me going enough to wake up this morning and finally put together the September 2012 edition of LMDM and unbelievable would be the best way to describe it. As usual, Steph manages to make an amazing tape that is a complete 360 degree turn from the last –

Well, tell me then which of these various styles you think is the best then huh?
The best I hear is the combined, the best of all styles. Put them together.”

I forget what movie I got that from but it’s the best way to try describe Stephs style – a constantly evolving blend of everything great music has to off.  I love that. If you take a look at the world around us, it seems like everyone is trying so hard to be something, to be classified, defined and identified. There are benefits to that and it certainly is comfortable and makes thing easy to understand but my problem with such thinking is that the second you become so defined you’ve instantly limited your experience. I’m not just talking about music here, it applies to all facets of life and can lead to severe lameness if not carefully observed. You ever meet someone who has it all figured out? It’s boring. The only thing constant is change and that scares a lot people but it’s a beautiful thing, the world keeps moving, everything grows and develops and in my mind that’s something to embrace. That’s the vibe LMDM gives me because I never know what to expect. Each tape continues to seduce and keep me on the edge and it’s wonderful. So Hadder (if thats your real name), I’ll join you in thanking Steph for this great experience. From start to end, month after month it truly is unbelievable, enjoy.

12 tracks for September. With one bonus. A month that rolls from one season to the next, September leaves us desperate to keep the sun but the season will change no matter how bad we might not want it to. heres to celebrating what was and whats to come… “

Night Panther – Snudge

Self-described as sex pop and synths, Philly-based Night Panther is just starting to rev its engines. Quietly releasing two singles so far this year, the duo is soon anticipating their full length LP. Snudge, the band’s first single released earlier this year, floats smoothly along, reminiscent of a less invasive MGMT. If you’re wondering what the heck a “snudge” is, no, its not a typo. It means to be stingy or miserly.

Love is nearly cheaper than human division.
Our love is a penny worth of beauty in a pool of unstable leeches.
We take our time to conjure a story,
to mark territory, continue to back our delicate messes,
we no longer feel for others.

The alter made the rules
and tangled the theory
of love and its laughter
which was set by the creatures of insensitive beings.
We take the pleasure in being defensive,
to please our senses,
forgetting our hearts
were made for affection.
We started a nasty fable.”

Night Panther weaves some deep thinking into the dreamy melodies. It’s refreshing to hear a chain of words that makes you lean in and listen. I spent my yesterday driving for eight hours and was pleased to discover this track as my wind-down moment of the day. I woke up in the actual “South” today still pondering the meaning of Snudge. Maybe I’ve been dreaming too deeply or Charleston, SC is altering my senses. I’m going with the flow, an easy task when soundtracked by this band.
