EMPT Presents – S U M M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2 d by Ryan Radler

For years when it came to EMPT I’ve been a one man band man. For those of you not familiar with the term coined by contemporary painter, producer, rapper Kasseem Dean aka Swizz Beatz, that basically means that from top to bottom I’ve running the show. Of course all credit due to Steph and the beloved LMDM series and Ryan Radler’s anti-winter/summer series, both which have become ultimate delineation of what Space Age Bachelor Pad Music is about, but when it came to running the show it all started and ended with yours truly. Recently however, things have changed and with my new fancy role as Creative Director there’s no way I would be able to keep this up. That’s where Mollie, the new EMPT operations boss comes in. If you’ve noticed the new increase in output lately she’s the reason why and compared to my sporadic post when I feel like it style of operation, it’s a welcome change. It’s great to see this site take on some new legs and run faster than it ever has and for that we’re all grateful. That said, looks like we’re ready to usher in a new era for EMPT and there are many reasons to be excited.

One of those reasons is the topic of todays conversation, S u m m e r : anti-winter 2d! Yet another inspired concoction of music from sir Ryan Radler. The tape starts off with with Keljet’s lights out remix of Coldplay’s UFO and then masterfully builds to an intermission provided by Quincy’s Summer In The City. I wish I was a better writer so I could tap into all my musical knowledge, experience traveling the world and living amongst different cultures so I could accurately express how wonderful it is when Ryan brings together these worlds, times and styles so effortlessly. Don’t get it twisted my friends, you can’t get this anywhere else. Music can be so many things, one day you might feel like Skrillex’s Kill Everybody because you love how aggressive, fast and exiting it makes life feel. Another day you’re bumping Hello Nasty or Doggy Style as loud as possible because it’s flat out fresh, that’s how you want to feel and…

Nothing sounds quite like an EIGHT-OH-EIGHT!” – Beastie Boys (Super Disco Breakin’)

The music Ryan puts together can be described as a lot of things but to me it’s mostly just beautiful. When I want to feel ethereal and put life in a the right perspective that’s where I’m going. Every one of these tapes has been nothing but good vibes and somehow this guy only gets better and better. Press play, kick back and you’ll see what I mean, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre 2011

I’ve never been a big fan of looking back, sure it’s comforting to reminisce about the good old times…

Hey you know everybody’s talking about the “good old days”
Everybody! The good old days
Well, let’s talk about the good old days…” – Gladys Knight

But in my mind the past does more harm than good. If you think about the past so much you’re going to constantly be ignoring what’s happening to you right now. The past is good for one thing and one thing only – educating yourself, learning from your mistakes and those of others, otherwise it should be avoided like the plauge. Your current situation is a result of your past thinking and thus your future situation will be a result of your thinking right now! However, if you keep thinking the same sh*&tty thoughts because you can’t stop thinking about the past you’re going end up with the same result. It will happen over and over and again and you’ll just be wondering why but the past is why…

Life is like a treadmill ni*#@s running in place,
Getting no where fast, a whole year done passed…” – Jay-Z (It’s Like That)

Like I said, the value of the past is education, it’s the only way to break the pattern. Otherwise it already happened and if you really think about it, it doesn’t even exists anymore, it’s literally just in your head. My conductor, the late great Walter J. Turnbull always told us – “you’re only as good as your last show.” That always stuck and it means more to me now than ever. Think about your job, say you’ve put in years of service but if you start screwing up today it’s good bye. If you’re in a relationship, those first months or years we’re wonderful but if you stop showing love, caring to impress, to improve and always keeps things fresh things are bound to go sour…

You’re only as good as your last show” – Walter. J. Turnbull

So what does all of this have to do with LMDM? Well, if you’ve been following LMDM these years you’ll know that this ruthless forward thinking mentality is at the very nature of Steph’s mix tape series and listening to this special version inspired all these thoughts. For those unfamiliar with the series this is a great way to get to know it, here’s why

Instead of a “best of” 2011 artist and songs mix,  our end of the year mix is a compilation of the best of LMDM’s of 2011. I tried to chose one track from each month, of the past 11 LMDMs but that was tough and turned into two select tracks per month, because lets face it, 22 tracks is better than 11 and I wanted this holiday tape to be a BIG one. Every LMDM I listen back on reminds me of what I did that month and the little moments that made the month, and piled on, that made the year. …Here’s to Hec and EMPT moving to LA and to a bigger better faster stronger 2012.

That said, here’s to the future, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3 c by Ryan Radler

Today is a bittersweet story as it is with both sadness and joy that I present to you the 2011 conclusion to Ryan Radlers wonderful mixtape series, anti-winter 3 c. Week after week Ryan has given summer luxurious and comprehensive soundtrack setting a unique vibe for all our estival activities – Dear anti-winter, we’ll miss you.

When I use to perform classical music under the tutelage of the the late great Dr. Walter Turnbull we learned that clapping in between movements or grand pauses is inappropriate. That always fascinated me because Dr. T was an incredible teacher and got us sing classics like Cantata 191 with mind blowing passion, I’ve personally never connected with music more then when I use to sing under him, and I’ve definitely never heard classical music sound anywhere close to that good. When we would finish the audience would instantly forget the etiquette and start clapping before they realized what they were doing. The point is that getting into clap mode takes you away from the piece and the experience the composer was trying to create. In the age of skip everything and immediate satisfaction music is rarely given the time to develop and seduce and I think we’re deprived because of it.

Anyways, though they have little in common, Ryans work made me think of those performances because his tapes have the same beautiful structure and movement. I highly recommend just pressing play and allow yourself to be entertained. Sure you could skip around but it’s just sooo much better to sit back and let it breath, develop, settle, build back up and take you on a journey. Anti-winter 3C is yet another fantastic effort and we’re delighted to bring it to you, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3B by Ryan Radler

I think releasing Ryans mixtapes on Monday’s has completely altered my perception of this previously dreaded day. I don’t know about you guys but everything in my life revolves around music, it’s my bread & butter, my hobby,  basically all of the above. I love it so there are no complaints, however I’m a fan of music before anything but since I’m always behind the scenes I rarely get to play that role. That’s why these mixtapes are such a treat for me. Once a week, I get to totally kick back and just enjoy someone else’s work on and vision and that’s mastercard priceless to me. By now you all know these tapes are predictably amazing so I don’t have to sell it to you, just Ryan Radler mixing up styles and genres like clockwork. That said, I’m gonna order some grub and chill out for the entirety of this tape before getting back to work, a much needed break. Enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Julliet 2011

I know a lot of you have been waiting but I finally got the new LMDM from Steph and once again it’s nothing short of amazing. Steph is super busy these days and I know how much work goes into making something this good every single time so on behalf of all EMPT heads I’m saying thanks, a month wouldn’t be the same without a dose of LMDM.

There are many ways to listen to LMDM but I highly recommend you do as I do – press play, sit back and put your trust in Steph. A lot of thought was given to the sequence so no fast forwarding, no rewinding, no flipping, just listening…

No need to doubt, I’ll show you my way.
No need to doubt, just stick with me…” – Loud Valley

I’m always curating music for brands these days and I rarely get to sit back and just enjoy someone else’s work. That’s why I cherish these tapes more than ever because I get to just sit back and go on Steph’s adventure. This one like all the others is a trip from start to finish so check out a few words from the mastermind herself as I go indulge in LMDM Julliet, enjoy.

Two amazing albums came out recently: Beirut’s new “Rip Tide” and Hooray for Earth’s “True Loves.” I can’t stop playing them. Go buy them and support the artists,  from start to finish, they are both amazing. Both bands are also touring this (end of summer/fall) so look out to see if they are coming through your city…this mix is a much lighter summer tape – for the winding down- half falling asleep-drink in your hand- smile on your face – sun about to call it quits – type of evenings. Hope you enjoy.”

Jonathan Johansson – Blommorna (Niva Remix)

You may remember Christian Niva from the last time we posted his starry-eyed remix of Blackbird Blackbird’s Hawaii. In the midst of this busy week I’ve been looking for music to counter the madness and this remix of Blommarna couldn’t be more fitting.

Nivas version of chillwave is one of my favorites. By nature the genre is meant to make you escape so many traditions and music making rules are broken to create to accomplish the task. For example, there are many schools of thought that would say too much reverb is bad for a mix but that implies that all mixes are the same and all try  to accomplish the same goal and feeling. In the monotonous world of pop music where everyone is expected to like the same thing and have the same feelings that works.

In the Space Age minds are much more open and we’re fond of new territories so rules will be broken. I think this is one of the main reasons people are put off with genres like Dubstep and Chillwave. The styles are so different from anything you’ve heard before that it makes it hard to listen to if you’re seeking the comfort of familiarity. That said, there are producers like Niva who use modern techniques tastefully making accessible to even the safest of listeners. His production on this remix is the perfect example managing to help you escape but never losing you with any overwhelming and unfamiliar elements. That’s all producer talk but above all he captures a very serene and relaxed feeling perfect for creating those moments of clarity. Alright, time to hit the streets and get ready for this party next week, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mai 2011

Where am I? I’ve been rockin’ for a good 27 hours now,  was in the studio with the Oos & Ahhs all day yesterday, pulled an all nighter to finish curating the music for a restaurant and then realized this morning I have to hook you up with this months mixtape – Go, go, go…

Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time…” – The Eagles

This months installment of LMDM is arriving 17 days late but in my opinion perfectly on time. I’ve been meaning to post about 9 of the 14 songs on the list which goes to show you how similar Steph and I are when it comes to music. There is much to be said about this line up, but I want to avoid too much talking because and let Mai 2011 shine. I’m pumped to finally have the new LMDM and I know a lot of you have been waiting so here it is, enjoy.

I decided to open this mix with Naked and Famous’ :48 intro called The Source which then goes into The Sun, my favorite track off the new album, besides Young Blood, and ended this month’s mix with one of my favorite Paris DJ’s Walter Sobcek, and his new remix of Parisian artist, Keren Ann, called My Name Is Trouble- the opener and closer of this month’s mix sets somewhat of a tone, which depending on the individual could feel completely different from one person to the next.

Blackbird Blackbird – Hawaii (Niva Remix)

First of all this remix is a midsummer nights dream. Christian Niva is one of my new favorite musicians and what a surprise he’s from Sweden. Can one of our Swedish readers hit me up and tell me what’s causing all this amazing music to happen over there?

Like many modern musicians Niva is a one-man-band-man. Meaning he produces, sings, writes and DJ’s. Many people associate him with the chillwave movement and listening to this remix and his single Ghost In My Head I won’t be the one to disagree.

My new goal in life is to do as much as possible in the least amount of time. You think of people like Tupac who died so young but somehow accomplished more than most people do in an entire lifetime. Nobody wants to go early but if that we’re the case and you left tomorrow what kind of legacy would you be leaving behind? People like Tupac, Bob Marley, Che and countless others did so much in so little time, it’s pure inspiration –

Only the good die young… – Billy Joel

I’ve been a hundred miles and running and constantly trying to make sure I’m making the most out of my time but every now and then you have to lay back, soak it all in and get ready for the next wave. On this beautiful Tuesday morning these songs fit the mood perfectly. There’s much to do today but for next few minutes I’ll be laid back chillin, enjoy.
