Tommy Noble – Shark (PrototypeRaptor Remix)

You guys have heard me rave about PrototypeRaptor before, and I’m pleased to share with you his latest remix. Part of me wants to save this banger for Friday, but then I remembered that songs shouldn’t necessarily have to be saved for specific days. Everyday should be special, especially in the summer. It’s always hard to write about electronic music because it’s more about the experience than anything else. However,PrototypeRaptorsets himself apart from other electronic artists because of his ability to weld high energy beats with beautiful and sophisticated melodies, sometimes, reminiscent of something you’d hear in a jazz or blues piece.

It’s always a really positive experience when your ears cross paths with a DJ who shows off a strong musical background alongside a good ear. It kind of makes me wonder and hope that more classically trained musicians start directing their attention towards the electronic soundscape. Not that they should stop what they’re doing and start something new, but maybe consider the fact that times are evolving, as is music. I always wonder when I hear artists like this what would happen if classical musicians were to screw around with electronic music.

This track can best be enjoyed walking through somewhere really busy. I first listened to it on my iPod in the middle of Union Square as I was trying to get some groceries. I love listening to electronic music around really large crowds because it kind of settles my neurotic tendencies around masses of people. Just ease in and pretend everyone around you is part of a music video for the song. It works every time.

Netsky – Puppy

Well. You guys know what I’m going to say before I say it, but it’s Thursday! So happy. It’s steamy in New York, just how I like it. It’s a true test of how much one can be pushed until breaking point. And the weather is so out of our control, which is what makes it even better.

Totally unrelated, my office is dog friendly. I get far too distracted by their presence, but I like to think that it actually helps me achieve happier work while I’m in the office. So let’s just say that’s the case. Today an adorable lil guy came in out of the blue (still don’t know who or why he’s here) and I immediately spazzed for 1.5 seconds at my boss. Coincidentally, I found this song almost right after the dog encounter. What the hell you guys, is the universe trying to tell me that I must get a puppy?

Okay fine I give in. I’ll quit life and settle down with a dog.

In all seriousness, this track was perfect upon first listen. It’s a little more high energy than what I’ve been posting about recently, but if you recall a post a couple of months ago aboutPrototypeRaptor, then you’ll hear the similarities. Very jazzy-inspired tones, and then a brief sample every now and then. I’m not entirely sure why it’s called Puppy…But maybe it’s because the feeling it gives you is similar to that of a brief encounter with an adorably spastic puppy dog? You know where they start jumping up and down and licking your ankles, and then eventually one of their ears flips inside out and they can’t get it to go back (this part actually bothers me, I’m always the one to flip it back but then it’s a lost cause because they just don’t stay still.)

See? There was a focus to this post. This week has been amazing for my musical encounters, and I was really happy to find this track. It’s adorable and synthy but also just so full throttle summer jam material. I hope you guys like it and feel free to comment!

PrototypeRaptor – Drive Hard

Every once in a while you come across a song that challenges your general idea of a specific genre. I guess you could say that sort of happened to me today, with this track. PrototypeRaptor (aka Jonathan Paulsen) is relatively new on the scene, (only 21 years old) but hasn’t yet gained any serious recognition. His tracks have slowly made their way onto Electro House charts alongside big name DJs, and there seems to be talk of his future work taking over the genre of Electro House. His style is reminiscent of Wolfgang Gartner in his earlier days, but his experimentation with synth and blues melodies provides a sound that is truly hard to miss.

The first word that came to mind when I heard this track was, “happy”. So I hope this track makes you happy, as I’m sure it will.
