Beta Love – Ra Ra Riot (RAC Remix)

How rare it is that I find an RAC remix that I don’t like. Upon first listen, thanks to the recommendation of my brother, I was taken by the attention to detail and sound, not to mention the delicate intro that plummets into an adorable bubbly anthem. This has RAC written all over it.

I will find my beta love
When I find my beta love

You will be my beta love
My beta love
Now we’re getting closer.”

I like the idea of robot experimental “beta” love. After all, what is love but an entire experimentation of human emotion? It is never the same from person to person. We’re all familiar with that feeling of new love, how it feels authentic and unique to not only any other experience you’ve had, but any experience anyone else in the world is having at the same exact moment. We have to tell ourselves that, don’t we? Otherwise, it isn’t special. And all love is truly special, particularly in the romantic sense. Perhaps it is this song’s job to remind us that this emotion is about constantly taking risks, holding nothing back. Paired with a cute and catchy beat, it embodies the sonic interpretation of the lovable subject matter.

Love is probably the most common subject you’ll find on EMPT, but that’s only because it’s the most prevalent inspiration for so much of art that we are surrounded by. Writing, music, fine arts, film, etc. all draw inspiration from a beta love in some shape or form. The way Ra Ra Riot annunciates “beta” in this song also makes it sound like they’re saying “better” with a British accent. Just something to think and smile about.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Octobre + Novembre 2012

Dwayne Carter Jr. is full of good lines but the following is hands down my favorite…

If I die today it be a holiday…”

If there’s ever a moment in my life when my perspective is so off or I’m doing something so terribly against my true nature that makes me feel otherwise then there’s something wrong. Life is too short to be dishonest with yourself or others and nothing matters that much to put up with bullshit from anyone. I’m lucky to have music, it’s the thing I love, it’s what I do for a living, it’s what makes me happy and it’s never let me down. The more I get into it, the more fulfilling and inspired I am and I thankful for it.

Which brings me to todays post. It’s important to have something to look forward to every day, week, month, year. Keep yourself going and make everyday interesting however you can. For many of us here and our readers of course, one thing that’s made our days and months better is the release of LMDM, our first and most beloved mixtape series by Steph Lund. Recently, I’ve gotten a few angry emails, frustrated request and desperate music love letters from folks asking about the tape. If it’s gone forever, why we’re slacking? etc. We appreciate it all and we listen, if there’s anything that keeps this train going is the passion we have for music and knowing that others share it with us. That said, there’s no excuse, Steph and I are just busy mofo’s these days. We both left NYC this year and have been 100 miles and running since keeping up with our clients, personal lives and so on. EMPT and LMDM we’re created on and still run on pure love so bare with us as we learn to manage the new demands. That said, we’re playing catchup and brining you a combined Octobre & Novembre that is pure concentrated amazing. Decembre soon to follow.

As is customary this tape is nothing like those before it and perhaps the only thing it shares with the them is the amazing feeling you get while listening to it. This one in particular has a great balance, I haven’t seen Steph in a while but I can tell these are the good times. I won’t Speak for her but just know that every song fantastic and the fast forward button is worthless while listening to this, enjoy…

Ra Ra Riot – Too Dramatic (The Morning Benders Remix)

I sat down this morning to look for some new music when my college buddy Rene sent me a text telling me to check out the new Morning Benders remix of Ra Ra Riots Too Dramatic. I love the Morning Benders and have been a long time Ra Ra Riots aficionado, on top of that Too Dramatic is my favorite song from The Orchard so I knew I was in for a treat. Short story shorter, the remix was everything I expected, the connection was instant and here I am brining it to yall – squalin!!!!

You’re too dramatic, I don’t understand it.

These days I’m really trying to stay away from the type of people this song talks about. What I mean is that life is a lot simpler than some people make it. Sure there are certain realities that are tough but anything can be overcome, it’s been shown time and time again. It all comes down to one’s relationship with what’s there and what’s not. If you live in your head aka fantasy then of course things will be much bigger than they really are because your imagination run wild and make things a spectacular problem. In the 50th law Curtis said –

Reality is my drug. The more I have of it, the more power I get and the higher I feel”

That really stuck with me back then and it’s starting to make more sense by the minute. Anyways, I have a hotel playlist to finish so I can’t stay and chat but check out this remix, it’s really something to vibe to, enjoy.

It comes down to reality and it’s fine with me cause I’ve let it slide…” – Billy Joel

Ra Ra Riot – Can You Tell (Discovery Remix)

I was going to post the original version of Can You Tell but I ran into this forgotten gem of a remix while looking for the MP3 soI decided to make it the subject of this post. Can You Tell was one of my favorite ‘08 songs, it’s a simple love song dealing with those initial jitters you get when first falling in love with someone… You know how you question everything you do, everything feels on edge. Are you showing to much interest? Playing it too cool? This is so amazing – do I even like this person? Most would agree this is the best part of getting into a fresh relationship and the main reason “I don’t like it unless it’s brand new.”

Ra Ra Riot – Can You Tell (Discovery Remix)

Oh have I been to discreet
How long am I supposed to wait
I think about you nightly
Oh can you tell i’m losing sleep.”

Discovery is the electro/pop side project of Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot. Great remix, wouldn’t say it’s better than the original but def worth while, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Aout

New month – new Le Miel du Mois mixtape on EMPT. I would write more but it’s Saturday and I need to back out in the sun asap, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Aout:  Last month, one of the fans of the monthly mix, “kiki,” commented on how Le Miel du Mois: Juillet makes her feel: “like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” Le Miel du Mois: Aout, aims to invoke the same exact feeling, but with a few minor alterations: sans pants, and add in flashing, flashing, lights lights lightssss.”

Ra Ra Riot – Can You Tell

I’ve probably heard about 7 or 8 versions of this song by now, doesn’t get old. Quality production and even better feel. It’s from their 2008 LP The Rhumb Line, definitely their best effort to date. Great song.
