Sam Sparro – Shades of Grey (Plastic Plates Remix)

Celebrating a month full of creepy mustaches couldn’t pair any better than with a nod to erotic fiction. Shades of Grey is nothing short of powerful, due in part to Sam Sparro‘s soulful crooning. Sparro’s sound reminds you of early Prince washed in modern day dance synths. His original version of Shades of Grey is a ballad of pain and truth, and his falsettos will make you reach for the sky.

When you do what you do
Your gonna hurt somebody,
Hurt somebody, hurt somebody
When you do what you do
Your gonna hurt somebody,
Lose somebody, never knew somebody
Could be so bold, be so cold
Your gonna yell for me when you get old
When you do what you do, you might miss somebody,
Miss somebody baby.”

Plastic Plates completely changes the vibe on this remix. Instead of reaching for a tissue, you’ll be reaching for more room on the dance floor. The combination of grooves and synths maintains a sense of the ’80s, but in a different frame of mind. Plastic Plates is a regular on EMPT and, as usual, he’s brought his A-game on this remix. Assuming this track is unaffiliated with the E.L. James novel, I’m still crossing my fingers that this remix will be part of the film-version soundtrack.

Sam Sparro – Pocket (The Presets Radio Mix)

I was recently talking to one of my friends about not letting strangers affect you. The idea is not being phased by someone who hasn’t earned the right to influence your mood, thoughts or feelings. In life we tend to place value on the opinions and thoughts of outsiders who have little to no idea who we are, what we do etc. Their opinion really doesn’t matter but many of us take things like this to heart and make life decisions based on this worthless perception. Of course, this implies that the people we keep close have earned the right to give you advice and opinions because you have allowed them to be major influences in your life. This creates a major vulnerability which nasty people usually exploit in breakups, divorces, arguments, friendships and so on. It’s also why the people closest to you are potentially the most dangerous…

Lessons, detrimental to a young disciple
Focus take care of your brothers, ni$&@s do as I do
Keep your enemies close where they can see you…

Think about it, who has more power to tarnish your reputation, a stranger or your best friend who knows every little detail about you, and if motivated can cleverly manipulate the truth for his/her benefit?

It’s not your enemy who gets you
It’s always your own people.” – Nas (In Between Us)

This doesn’t mean go around worrying – “you can’t spend your whole life worrying about what’s behind you” – but when people are mad they’re capable of doing things without understanding the implications so don’t be naive. Pocket by Sam Sparro is all about awareness and being wise to human nature. A very successful businessman sat me down one day and told me that his reputation was his most valuable asset and he protected it with his life. Unless you’re a bad person to begin with, your friends are the only people capable of harming you so watch them closely. If they do anything to ruin it, well that’s never forgive action. In the end, we have to be accountable for anything that happens so choose your friends wisely, follow your gut and be quick to walk away from ANY relationship that feels the least bit off.

So keep your friends close and your enemies in your pocket…”

Penguin Prison – Golden Train (Sam Sparro Remix)

I was a Tammany Hall last night checking out The Knocks and Penguin Prison, two bands that continue to make indie label Neon Gold a force to reckon with in 2011. I didn’t stay for The Knocks but I saw Penguin Prison and heard them perform a bunch of new material that got the party going. They have a song called Don’t Fuck With My Money that’s destined to be my favorite song when they finally have a studio version. That was my first time catching them live and I was very impressed with the energy and excitement those guys brought to the table, I highly recommend keeping an eye out when they come to your city.

However, the real story last night was a lesser known but very promising band called Like Diamonds. The group opened up the show with one of the most diverse and interesting sets I’ve heard in a long time. Someone looked over at me and asked what genre they played, I looked back and said I had no idea. The only word I can use to describe these guys is limitless, their sense of arrangement is fearless as they effortlessly switch from on style to the other from song to song. It’s much better heard then said and we should have some exclusives for you guys soon so stay tuned. Alright, time to run but I’ll leave you guys with Sam Sparro’s excellent remix of Penguin Prisons latest release Golden Train, enjoy.
