EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1C by Ryan Radler

Alright it’s official, labor day has passed so it’s no longer cool for chicks to wear white and summer is fictionally over. You gotta love labor day, yet another completely random holiday with no real significance. I refuse to acknowledge this symbolic end of the season so until the sweaters and jackets are back in rotation it’s all s u m m e r: a n t i – w i n t e r over here baby.  Speaking of which, mixtape connoisseur Ryan Radler sent me his latest installment of the anti-winter series over the weekend and I’ve been keeping it all to myself. I’m like Gail Wynand with art, I get attached to it and I want to keep it all to myself except I have a EMPT and all I do is share music, oh the juxtapositions. This tape like all the others is skip free listening because the song selection from start to finish is fantastic. I mean Herb Albert in between Bath & Pandit, Space Age Bachelor Pad Music? Yes.

I have no medical or scientific findings to support this statement but I’m pretty sure that listening to Ryans tapes at least once a day may be a great way to lower cholesterol, relieve stress and regain youth. I mean try to listening to this with a frown, I don’t care what cosmically insignificant problems you’re dealing with at the moment, it’s impossible. I have to say, I’m a huge fan of all these tapes but on this Tuesday morning 1 C is spot on, enjoy.

The Naked and Famous – Young Blood (White Sea Remix)

Just attended my 2nd show of The Naked and Famous last night (pic above), they validated again to me, they’re here to stay. Their album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, was hands down my favorite album of 2010. As their fame grows, the Kiwi’s are starting to make their presence known to the rest of the United States. Their distinguished electropop feel with catchy hooks continues to echo in my head for days. It’s refreshing to see a band with such potential hit such a high note on a freshman album, however, they now have set the bar high for themselves. I hope when they return to the studio, they can build off their momentum.  Everyone knows of Young Blood by now I’m sure, but this crafty remix from M83’s side project, White Sea, has given the superb track a unique feel. Morgan Kibby captures the essence of Young Blood by adding a slow build into a choppy takeoff:

We’re only young and naive still
We require certain skills
The mood it changes like the wind
Hard to control when it begins

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-betweens
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Can’t help myself but count the flaws
Claw my way out through these walls
One temporary escape
Feel it start to permeate

We lie beneath the stars at night
Our hands gripping each other tight
You keep my secrets hope to die
Promises, swear them to the sky”

I can’t stress enough to give TNAF’s album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, a listen immediately if you haven’t already done so. White Sea adds to their brilliance as if you enjoy M83, you’ll hands down enjoy anything from them as well. Enjoy your Saturday while you retain your Young Blood.

The Naked & Famous – Young Blood

The Naked & Famous is a group from New Zealand whose record Young Blood teared it up back home this summer. I know what you’re thinking, they sound like Passion Pit, maybe even MGMT depending on who you’re talking to. The gift and curse of gaining attention as a new artist, you instantly get compared to someone else, however, if you’re drawing comparisons to those guys and making songs like this I’d say you’re doing something right…

I’m a tell you what Banks told me cuzz go ‘head switch the style up
If the they hate then let ’em hate
Watch the money pile up” – 50 Cent

Here’s a shocker, Neon Gold, the label behind for Passion Pit, Marina & The Diamonds, Ellie Goulding and The Knocks is singing them up to help increase their international appeal. I don’t know who the A&R at that label is but they’re picking winners right now, very impressive. Alright, I have no time for anything these days so I can’t dive into this song like I want to but press play on this gem, enjoy.

We’re only young and naive still
We require certain skills
The mood it changes like the wind
Hard to control when it begins…”
