Zeds Dead – Lost You (ft. Twin Shadow & D’Angelo Lacy)

Zeds-Dead-Lost-You-608x608

There was a time, not so long ago, when dubstep was a novel and exciting new rhythmic frontier. Born from the musical traditions of reggae (dub), jungle, d&b, and garage, dubstep began in the late 90’s, early aughts in England (always ahead of the curve). The term was literally coined by Ammunition Promotions, a company that promoted the ongoing Forward>> club night (now at the Shoreditch hot spot Plastic People).

The “Forward>> Sound,” it was said, would “make your chest cavity shudder.” It was all bass, all the time, but utilized space and ambient elements to cast a patently evil, lurking impression. The sound had its own radio show, hosted by genre pioneer Kode9, which featured many early pioneers, from Plastician and Digital Mystikz to Skream and Benga, who were arguably the first crossover acts.

Skream’s “Midnight Request Line” was the nascent genre’s first radio hit, and led to influential Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs dedicating an entire show to dubstep. Though the acts were barely known outside of underground circles, the Hobbes show was the start of dubstep’s global march. Within a year, Burial (who was still anonymous and totally unknown to 99.99% of global audiences) was appearing on “Best Of 2006” critics lists and dominating the soundtrack to Alfonso Cuaron’s hit film, “Children of Men” (One of this writer’s all time favorite films).

Over the next three years, audiences grew (via torrent, for the most part) in the USA and beyond, and artists like Joker and Coki gained name recognition. Labels sprang up to capitalize on the new sound’s (though it was almost a decade old already) popularity.

And then it happened.

Britney Spears, of all people, was one of the first pop acts to feature dubstep elements (though I’m sure it wasn’t her choice, but rather the tuned-in producers she worked with). But the blogosphere, which itself was still finding footing in ’07, finally caught on when La Roux released Skream’s remix of “In for the Kill.” Truly, that track was the first international mainstream dubstep success.

We all know what followed. Every pop artist under the sun, from Snoop to Rihanna jumped on the bandwagon, and suddenly top-40 stations sounded an awful lot like a dank warehouse at 3am, except bombastic and recycled, rather than rebellious and grimy.

And soon, tragically, brostep was born. Skrillex is the obvious poster boy for what I describe not as music, but as “Transformers f*cking.” Frat bros all of a sudden “loved raving.” People who would have never listened to metal were, well, listening to metal, albeit in electronic format. Rusko, who had been a legitimate dubstep pioneer, should shoulder some of the blame for this trend, but his dedication to reggae roots gains him some forgiveness. Once Korn got involved, fans of “real” dubstep knew that the genre’s epitaph had been carved.

Zeds Dead emerged as a genre powerhouse in ’09, with the backing of influential producers Kissy Sell Out and Skream. The Canadian duo took a brief step towards brostep, but thankfully stayed out of the truly offensive fray and instead charted a different path focused more on glitch and hip-hop stylings. Their remix of The Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter” remains one of the best dubstep remixes ever, and their aggressive collabs (“Undah Yuh Skirt”, for example) with modern reggae greats like Mavado give them a serious street credibility.

I’m no longer the dub-head I once was, and had basically lost track of Zeds Dead until recently. I’m glad to report that “Lost You,” their latest release featuring Twin Shadow and D’Angelo Lacy is a brilliant showcase of their ability to blend genres without alienating fans on either side. This is a track that can drop in a top-40 club or an underground warehouse party without breaking the mood. Twin Shadow’s disco vocals fit perfectly with Zeds’ garage beat, and of course, the drop is dubby as f*ck, but with a “slappa da bass” pop that keeps it from veering into bro-territory.

Twin Shadow – Old Love/New Love

Video-Twin-Shadow-At-My-Heels

Originality is the trait I value above all others in art. I may listen to an endless list of similar-sounding British rock outfits in the car and enjoy every minute of it, but I recognize that these bands aren’t pushing the envelope. I like when an artist takes their medium somewhere it hasn’t gone before.

Tom Scholz, the founder of Boston, invented an entire range of new guitar sounds. Donna Summer and Kraftwerk began the techno movement (from opposite ends of the spectrum, yet at the same time). Steely Dan approached popular music as classical arrangers, literally struggling to find people good enough to play their complex songs. And those are just some musical examples. Consider Raphael, Van Gogh, Hitchcock, Miyazaki, Calder, Hiroshige.

Twin Shadow isn’t on the level of these artists. Not even close. But his utilization of space (a la D’Angelo) in a disco/new wave medium is exciting. And how many songs in those genres have authentic gospel breakdowns?

“Old Love/New Love” is a versatile song. It fits during either commute, at a party, in headphones over work, at the beach. Funky!

What am I supposed to say?
An old love called me yesterday…
And she sounds so sweet.
Why, she sounds so…”

MS MR – Hurricane (Twin Shadow Remix)

Welcome to the inner workings of my mind
So dark and foul I can’t disguise
Can’t disguise
Nights like this
I become afraid
Of the darkness in my heart
Hurricane.”

This song is all about the mind’s inner darkness. It’s the thoughts we purposefully push away, the parts of our mind that we don’t want anyone to see. There’s something both frightening and intrinsically beautiful about the one part of our lives that we all happen to share, that nobody will ever know anything about. We put up barriers, refrain from talking to certain people even, because we claim not to “trust” them for varying reasons. But a lot of it has to do with our minds, that darkness that we don’t want the world to see.

I had the pleasure of attending Sleep No More last night and while I won’t spend time gushing about it in this post, despite how much I’d love to do just that, I’ll save it for Tumblr. I will say that I had an experience unlike any other, and that one moment in the night really connected with me in a way that deserves mentioning here. It was right after a scene where Macbeth had been doing a handless headstand. He brought himself to his feet, paced a five foot area of space for a moment, and then turned to the crowd where he locked eyes with just me. He approached me, held my head in his hands as if to kiss me, then whispered into my ear a line that I now cannot remember (Shakespearean lingo in all fairness, is not always at the tip of my tongue). The meaning was all I took away from it, and I managed to remember that: Things look bad on the surface, but they always get better later.

This song was the first one I listened to today, and it could not have connected better with my emotions after last night. Being afraid of the darkness within, encountering it and allowing it to exist is exactly what this song, and my current mindset, is all about.

Enjoy!

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Heart In Your Heartbreak (Twin Shadow Remix)

Will you just listen to the production on this track? Seriously, will you? It’s damn good. Twin Shadow has got everything right with this. Right off the bat we’re moving forward to the quick guitar plucking and smooth bass line. It’s the bass that keeps me coming back to this track for more. Somehow it manages to sound like summer and autumn at the same time. Perhaps its the bass’ refusal to stay on one note for too long. The line is forever in flux and as a result, the song keeps going and going until it reaches a breaking point and calms itself down allowing for the strings (which have been quietly mixing in the background) to have their way. Then bit by bit each element of the song is reintroduced.

I listen to this song and feel like I’m in Sofia Coppola’s vision of  Marie Antoinette’s Versailles. This track would fit seamlessly between New Order’s “Ceremony” and The Radio Dept. tracks on the film’s soundtrack. There’s an odd 80’s vibe to this track that maintains the fresh quality of the production. Singer, Kip Berman’s pre-pubescent voice chills the track down with his New York City aloof boredom while Twin Shadow gives the track its movement. It’s as if the production is telling Berman to give it up and move on because what’s the point in hanging on to someone whose actions have leveled them entirely?

Take a look around when you’re going down
’cause you’ll never feel so high
as when you hid her arms in the sky and the world slept.
And there’s no use to say just how much it kills
when it still kills all the same.
Every thought of her name, like a hand to an open flame.”

You know, despite the tracks melancholy lyrics I’ve found some hope within them. There’s an odd irony to the verses that are lost with the original tracks poppy-OK GO-like production. Twin Shadow switches the sonic roles up, and focuses us on the story by providing a production that stresses the very act of moving on. Sometimes it seems we get all wrapped up in the words of things and find words to describe the wrapped up feeling only to find ourselves more off-put and down than we were before the introduction of words. That’s where music and sounds truly come in to save us from the dismal cycle of defining something.

When I was in musical theater, my music director and choreographer told us that when words aren’t enough, sing; when singings not enough, dance. I like to reverse that and believe that when words are too much, listen.

Cheers.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Juillet 2012

If you haven’t noticed by now EMPT is in a new era. Some have noticed the new direction and expressed concern but in my mind if you’re not getting better you’re getting worse. Sometimes you have to be a little disruptive to move forward and break your comfort zone which may be keeping you stuck in a certain place or patten. Think of a company like RIM, what they were doing in their glory days was awesome, they innovated the smartphone yet they rested on their laurels and never disrupted their own patterns. Instead they let another company come along and do it for them. Steve Jobs always said it’s better to cannibalise your own products with something newer and better than let your competition do it for you, I couldn’t agree more.

That said, we’ve destroyed our old ways to rebuild something brand new and now we’re giving you more music than ever, more variety and more perspective yet it’s all still within the taste and style of the EMPT you know and love. We’ve got an all-star team of writers, Ryan Radler bringing nothing but mixtape greatness, Mollie keeping things going and oh did I forget to mention we still have Steph Lund’s beloved Le Miel du Mois on our roster…

Let’s take it to the basics, you in the midst of greatness,
My Martin was a Maison rock Margielas with no laces…” – VSVP Rocky

So here we are another Monday, another installment of LMDM and it’s fantastic – tell me something new. As usual Steph covers the full spectrum constantly taking us to and fro bittersweet love, desperation, lust, hope, dance, chill out, summer times, good times, you name it. I can’t stress this enough, do not let your microwave listening habits interfere with experiencing this tape. Every single song was selected and sequenced a certain way for your listening pleasure so do yourself a favor, press play and let take on the LMDM experience, you won’t regret it. Enjoy.

Diamonds, pearls, they feel alright. when i see you standing there, the evening sun upon your hair. covered up with garden dirt. with just one glance you tear my skirt.”

Twin Shadow – Beg For The Night

I first heard Twin Shadow last fall sitting on the floor of my friend’s bedroom. It was early in the night, but we weren’t rallying for anything crazy – just a good time and some good tunes. He turned on George Lewis Jr.’s – (Twin Shadow’s real name) first album, Forget, and I was instantly hooked. It had such a fresh sound. It’s one of those albums that you can play from the beginning and listen to it straight through rather than jump from this track to another. Needless to say, I’ve been waiting for Twin Shadow’s newest release, Confess, to come out for a while.

This track builds on the sound Forget established and takes it deeper into the alt-dance realm. I can’t not bop my head or shake my shoulders to the beat when this is playing. It has a summer vibe and a chorus with Toto-like harmonies that make the lyrical longing seem like summer bliss. When the synths come in and build during the second verse, you’ll want to close your eyes and sway with the driving beat. It’s an track oozing with 80’s nostalgia made for todays ears.  The title captures the track’s sound perfectly. The beat and melody keep going and going and going. It’s a track that’ll carry you into your Saturday night with ease. Enjoy the night y’all.

PS: Confess drops next week on July 10th.

Oh Land – White Nights (Twin Shadow Remix)

We first caught Oh Land at Brooklyn Bowl during the Northside Festival last year, where she was endearing and stylish, with a sweet voice that translated to a mysterious yet demanding presence on stage. Now, the Danish-turned-Brooklynite singer is prepping for the launch of an album dropping March 15th, the first single of which was remixed by Twin Shadow (below). If you like Oh Land remixes, definitely check out the Yusek remix of “Son of a Gun.” A little Lykke Li and Florence Welch, she is taking her pop star status from back home and the indie roots she’s planted here to quickly catapult herself into the mainstream. You can catch Oh Land, aka Nanna Fabricius, at Hiro Ballroom in NYC on January 26th.
