Martina Topley Bird – Poison (Van She Remix)

Poison+Van+She+Remix

I first started getting into electronic music in 2005. I listened to “Discovery” before that and, if it counts, “The Hampster Dance” (WHO DIDN’T? RIGHT? ANYONE?), but didn’t start listening to new productions until I cut my long hair and emerged from a 70s metal phase.

Hype Machine had just been created, and it allowed newcomers like me to delve deep into the nascent music blog network. Those were the days when the HM feed was filled with weird Euro bangers and complete unknowns.

One blog I linked to was Blue Walrus, a new, eclectic blog that occasionally posted electronic tracks. I checked in from time to time. In 2007, site founder Tim Dickinson posted a mixtape (which became a multi-part series) called “Clap Your Hands to the Electricity,” which featured tracks and remixes by Justice, Boys Noize, Sebastian, and The Klaxons among others. One track was Dragonette’s fantastic “I Get Around,” here remixed by Australia’s Van She. I fell hard for that track and still listen to it as a pregame amp anthem.

I dug deeper into the catalogues of all of those artists and, well, now they are all household names among a certain sect of music aficionados. Except for Van She.

The band started in 2002 in Australia, and never really broke out. I never was a big fan of their original music, but as remixers, they were and are some of the best in the game.

The track I’ve selected to share today is Van She’s remix of Martina Topley Bird’s “Poison.” The sultry vocals of the original are lifted from a sparse jungle drum beat and layered atop Van She’s trademark rhythmic guitar plucking and aggressive synth revs. The result is straightforward, sexy and fun. A stand up through the sun roof  kind of jam. Hope you enjoy it.

Van She – Jamaica (Plastic Plates Remix)

I love this track so much and the Plastic Plates remix of Jamaica is off the chain, giving this already tropical electronic mantra even more jungle fever, it’s the perfect song for summer especially since its starting to wind down.  I know I know I shouldn’t remind you all, but I am in such vacation mode right now that I won’t let this summer end until I actually go on you.  I feel like the older we get the less time we have to take adventure time/ vacation time/ however you want to look at it.  There are always obstacles, thats why I have a huge tattoo of Ganesha on my back to remind me everyday that these obstacles are necessary to really understand life and the path that will lead you in the right direction, my life is full of obstacle and I don’t think I would have it any other way, makes each day more interesting.

If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” -Frank A. Clark

Plastic Plates really knows how to do any track justice, even though Van She had no issues making Jamaica into a track that I literally can’t get enough of, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, BANG, they take it to a level that really doesn’t exist, with their electronic genius.  If you can’t get enough of Plastic Plates music like me then just go to their Soundcloud right now and make it your Friday playlist.  I have a lot of running around today but I wanted to start you all off which will definitely get your Friday poppin’ like crazy, just don’t take your clothes off at work, EMPT can only take so much blame, enjoy!

Van She – Jamaica

It’s been storming all day long and I have to say I love it.  Nothing better to me then warm stormy summer weather that I just want to dance around in and drink some crisp beer.  I love how around 2:08 in the track the horns start to blast and the track takes you into an even bigger louder trance.  This trance makes me thinking about taking a trip, I’ve been talking with my best friend about heading somewhere tropical, we both haven’t done that in ages and this track makes the picture and the thought all too real! I just feel really good when I listen to this, for me it screams summer, beaches, and love.

Now I just realized I have been pronouncing their name wrong, yep I can totally admit when I am wrong and I have too much respect for musicians to go around pronouncing their name wrong.  So for those of you who were doing the same thing I was its “Van Ski”.  So back to the track…

The use of drums and synth in this track is priceless, there is a lot going on but the way these guys have it all blended is so beautiful.  Vocalist Nicholas Routledge has a voice that literally moves like a wave like it just doesn’t stop and keeps you glued.

We are just all animals eating food, making love to the music of life

Need I say more about that line, it’s one of the best lines I have heard all week, we are all one with the world.  I am going to go dance around in this stormy summer rain with this tune on repeat in my head, enjoy!

Van She – Idea Of Happiness (SebastiAn Remix)

I love those lyrics man, couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s no secret that in this vastly changing world there’s a new wave of momentum and demand creating a perceived shortage of time that is quite commonplace for most of us. It seems like these days most of us have a relationship with time that is defined by pressure, shortage and limits. You ever talk to a friend that literally has no time to do anything? When you don’t fully understand the value of time it’s easy to take on more than one can bear. Nothing good about that.

As we all know time is quantifiable, it’s continued progress that we’re aware of and everyone abides by. Time can also be perceived, for example if you’re doing something terribly boring time can seem to go by painfully slow. Think about how time feels when you’re doing something lame, it can be slow and dreadful. Now look back at the last 5 years of your life, how fast have those come and go? It’s a wild concept when you think about that runs so deep it’s almost impossible to comprehend. In Idea of Happiness Van She captured this duality perfectly…

Time, just keeps on slipping away
I can feel the hands of the clock tick, tick, ticking away
But it’s nothing more than my mind slowly giving away
We got so much time, to think about yesterday
Just thinking on yesterday

If you’re not keeping up with time you’re going to be under constant pressure from it, always behind it . That leads to one of the most dangerous time killers I know of – dwelling on the past. Time waits for no man, it doesn’t stop so in order to keep up with it a person has to have a deep appreciation and discipline to make the most of it. Might sound cliche but it’s not something to be taken lightly, enjoy.
