Inspired by the mythical power of the full moon and the famous parties of Southeast Asia, MATTE’s Full Moon develops this narrative with New York’s distinct culture and edge – a transcendental beach party in the center of New York Harbor with sounds, art and food from a carefully curated lineup of musicians, DJs, artists, and chefs.

Full Moon 2013 is New York’s not-to-be-missed summer music event, blurring the line between festival and dance party. In 2012, Full Moon was attended by over 2,500 of New York’s finest and written up by titles such as Bullett Magazine, NY Mag and VICE.

This year, The Beach at Governors Island serves as an urban paradise for Full Moon – a sunset over the Statue of Liberty, a moonrise over Lower Manhattan.

Full Moon’s 2013 lineup will feature Miami Horror, Tanlines, Wild Belle, Cyril Hahn, Float Fall, The Knocks, Yuksek, & more.

Wild Belle – It’s Too Late (Employee Of The Year Remix)

image

I recently finished a novel, The Killer Angels, whose prose could be charitably described as straightforward and strong. You could also call it basic, unassuming, or dull, depending on your tastes in literature. It’s a book about a tough subject – war – and while it isn’t Hemingway, it’s fairly restrained in its descriptions and retellings, much to its benefit.

I’ve been an avid reader my entire life. I’ve read many books; books that have ran the gamut in sensibility from high to low. I’ve been challenged, engrossed, and upset by the pages I’ve buried my face in over the years. I’m also cognizant of how my tastes have evolved. If I had picked this book up a few years back, I would have likely been unmoved and bored and would’ve tossed it away in short order. I liked my writing flowery, with pages rich in vocabulary and overflowing in detail. But my tastes have shifted. Now I have an appreciation for the minimal.

Many creators have put together great works that are nearly overflowing with ideas. Even more creators put together works that are truly overflowing with ideas. Great writing, like great music, can be maximalist in nature. A surplus of voices, the implementation of multiple stylistic conventions, and tonal shifts galore can all add up to an ebullient masterwork. Or they can lead to a muddled product that will not engage anyone aside from the composer. Dazzle all you want with your technical prowess. But if no one’s connecting to your art, then you’re just getting high on your own supply.

What then is the case for small gestures and restraint? What it boils down to is this: there’s a great deal of power in the unsaid. What better way to make something stand out by making it the only something? Compelling material can pop in high relief when it has nothing to compete with. But there’s something else. The real strength in the minimal is those gaps and voids, where context becomes abstraction and a listener’s imagination can run wild. Employee Of The Year’s remix of Wild Belle’s It’s Too Late takes this philosophy to heart. Every aspect of this track rings out and the spaces inbetween are caulked with emotion. The results are mesmerizing.

In a song like this, not much is happening and everything is happening. Very few effects employed here, and what is utilized is imparted in dashes and bits. There’s some doubling on Natalie Bergman’s vocals and hey affect and ache, unadorned. The electric guitar is used mostly to add a bit of texture to an acoustic piano. This results in a simple two-chord progression taking on some new emotional heft. Best of all, the lyrics match the subdued sonic atmosphere. When Bergman relates the core of her desires, simple and direct as they are, her only accompaniment is a gently undulating synth line. While she eventually completes the verse with the full strength of the production behind herm her desires couldn’t be more universal, and she doesn’t need a lot of words and sounds to convey them.

I need a man that treats me right
He’ll feed me supper more than twice
I’m not asking for lots of fancy toys
Someone to keep me warm at night.”

Anything but stark, every part of this track stands out like black ink on white paper. Oh by the way, I loved the book. I loved this track in much the same way.

Wild Belle – It’s Too Late (Snakehips Remix)

I really wanted a mellow, feel good Sunday track and I got even more then I had hoped for with this remix of Wild Belle’s “Its Too Late”.  London’s own Ollie Dickinson AKA: Snakehips, took the groove too the next level with some more base and a hip-hop/club style feel, a remix that you can really move too, but chill and feel the calm in the midst of any crowd or any situation.  Don’t front, I know the SWAG has captured you!

It’s a great track to wind down your week/weekend while listening to Natalie Bergman’s sexy bedtime vocal’s you can really breakdown anything that was thrown at you during the week with a peace of mind.  It’s amazing how the tone of someones voice can change everything. I mean can you imagine if you were having a horrible argument with someone except you both were talking in sultry sexy bedtime voices, that argument probably would turn into some steamy love making, just sayin’…

Lately I have been finding lyrics that have resonated for me so perfectly..

Now that you want me it’s too late
It’s too late for love
Or when you got me
You don’t care
It’s too late for love

I’m tired, so tired of playing …
My mind is made up
Uuuuuh uuuh
I’m not coming back to you

I need a man that treats me right
He’ll treat me right
He’ll feed me supper more than twice
Yes he will, yes yes, he will
I’m not asking for lots of fancy toys
I don’t need a lot of fancy toys
Someone to keep me warm at night.”

..And when “it’s too late”, it’s too damn late.  Whether it’s friends, boyfriends or girlfriends I don’t think you have to look at these lyrics in one way.  However you want to apply them, do so.  Thanks Wild Belle, I needed this, and it has made my Sunday too good, hope this groovin’, sexy, boss remix gives you the same chill vibrations it’s given me, enjoy!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Juillet 2012

If you haven’t noticed by now EMPT is in a new era. Some have noticed the new direction and expressed concern but in my mind if you’re not getting better you’re getting worse. Sometimes you have to be a little disruptive to move forward and break your comfort zone which may be keeping you stuck in a certain place or patten. Think of a company like RIM, what they were doing in their glory days was awesome, they innovated the smartphone yet they rested on their laurels and never disrupted their own patterns. Instead they let another company come along and do it for them. Steve Jobs always said it’s better to cannibalise your own products with something newer and better than let your competition do it for you, I couldn’t agree more.

That said, we’ve destroyed our old ways to rebuild something brand new and now we’re giving you more music than ever, more variety and more perspective yet it’s all still within the taste and style of the EMPT you know and love. We’ve got an all-star team of writers, Ryan Radler bringing nothing but mixtape greatness, Mollie keeping things going and oh did I forget to mention we still have Steph Lund’s beloved Le Miel du Mois on our roster…

Let’s take it to the basics, you in the midst of greatness,
My Martin was a Maison rock Margielas with no laces…” – VSVP Rocky

So here we are another Monday, another installment of LMDM and it’s fantastic – tell me something new. As usual Steph covers the full spectrum constantly taking us to and fro bittersweet love, desperation, lust, hope, dance, chill out, summer times, good times, you name it. I can’t stress this enough, do not let your microwave listening habits interfere with experiencing this tape. Every single song was selected and sequenced a certain way for your listening pleasure so do yourself a favor, press play and let take on the LMDM experience, you won’t regret it. Enjoy.

Diamonds, pearls, they feel alright. when i see you standing there, the evening sun upon your hair. covered up with garden dirt. with just one glance you tear my skirt.”
