EMPT Presents — S U M M E R: a n t i – w i n t e r 1 e by Ryan Radler

artworks-000050754382-kn684i-t500x500

Whether we like it or not, a new month approaches like a long lost relative, familiar out of necessity but still foreign with the possibilities that it brings. August is one of my favorite months of the year, and in the summer, because it’s absent of annoying holidays and tedious celebrations that all really commemorate the same things. Not to be cynical or anything, I’m really not, it’s just that my brother is born in August, and Ramadan for the past couple of years has ended in August, which makes it a really spiritually happy month. It also makes the start of September feel like a new year, which puts me in a clear head space, prepared for the remaining months in 2013.

For this month, my musical selection and soundtrack to my everyday routine has been picky. More picky than usual, actually. I want something that speaks to the end of a beautiful nostalgic time, while simultaneously fueling my energetic brain for the ambitious future that lies ahead. Which is why I was pleased to hear this edition of Ryan Radler’s beloved mixtape series. I think something that we like to talk about, and something that I am always aware of, is the power of a well crafted, finely curated mix-tape. While we tend to love mix-tapes that tell a story, I have a vast appreciation for those that successfully transition in and out of songs in a way that matches the flux and wavelike movement of my moods. I think I listen to mix-tapes because I want the feeling of letting go and allowing something else to take hold of my emotions, while not consciously doing so.

What I love about this edition of S U M M E R is the nostalgia and innocence that strings each song together. The vocal samples are what inspire my feelings of nostalgia. Innocent, because the emotion that each selection of song brings is raw and unabashed. It’s telling me to forget about my troubles for an hour and do good by me.

I’m doing just that. Today, just do you. Every day, really. But especially today while you embark on this journey of a mix.

Wildcat! Wildcat! – The Chief

It’s the middle of the week again and you need a reason to keep the train running.  Slip on your comfy slippers, exhale, lean back, put on your good headphones and plug in to L.A. trio Wildcat! Wildcat!’s new track, The Chief.

After completing a ‘Wild’ly successful residency at Los Angeles’ Echo, a venue known for hosting such notable indie performers like Dntel, Band of Horses, and Beck, Wildcat! Wildcat! is truly on the up and up in the local L.A. music scene.  Though with its delicate melodies and anthemic falsetto hooks, their recently released single The Chief (also available on vinyl) has permeated beyond the City of Angels’ limits and is slowly but surely gaining due respect on the world wide web.  And for good reason.

If an avid indie listener was playing “Name That Tune” and was only given the beginning bass note, they might confuse The Chief with Sleigh BellsParliament-sampling Rill Rill.  Similarly, it’s packed with the heart-gripping R&B pulse and warmly delivered coquettish vocals that demand repeated listens from both.  As the song progresses, we’re treated to sugary chords complemented with slow-funk bass lines.  This isn’t the only indication of their intuitive musicianship: their soaring crescendos link together the smooth, inviting phrases. Also, the instrumental bridge at 1:50 does exactly what certain types of successful bridges do: brings us to home to a walloping payoff.  The excellent outro contains a winning harmonic resolve, but this time around, we get a genuine climactic saxplosion and a (did they just go there?) bald eagle cry.

The eagle cry is obviously foreshadowing the soaring career ahead of them.  Word-of-mouth marketing should serve them well, because you pretty much can’t say the band’s name without sounding utterly enthusiastic. Two cheers to a bright future for Wildcat! Wildcat!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Fevrier et Mars 2012

It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here. LMDM is back and the beloved mixtape is as my greatest inspiration would put it, insanely great. Per usual Steph captures a multitude of feelings, emotions and styles sure to keep the worst of music skimmers engaged and entertained. All the selections come together to portray a sort melancholic hope that instigates both thoughts of lost loves and desired passions. Great art always explores both coast, it always makes you think of the sad while inspiring the beautiful. LMDM is great art to me and throughout this unique combination of February & March that’s exactly what happens.

Born & raised on EMPT, Le Miel du Mois has become one of our most special and cherished offerings. Press play on this one, you won’t regret it.

The latest mixtape is a ‘Fevrier et Mars’ combination, since I was back and forth London/New York the last 7 months, I had to combine these two in one. The opening track and closing track to the LMDM’s are probably the ones I spend most time on, making sure they fit in opening/closing, so I hope you’ll find it right to fit your own close to March. Favorite artists I’m listening to right now are the latest from Youth Lagoon, Grimes, Tennis, Summer Camp, Breton and Beach Fossils. Also love what I’ve heard so far from Lefse Records new artist, Way Yes. Excited for more and for those that went to sxsw, tell us what some of your favorite artists you discovered there were.Want to hear about the new miels.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3 c by Ryan Radler

Today is a bittersweet story as it is with both sadness and joy that I present to you the 2011 conclusion to Ryan Radlers wonderful mixtape series, anti-winter 3 c. Week after week Ryan has given summer luxurious and comprehensive soundtrack setting a unique vibe for all our estival activities – Dear anti-winter, we’ll miss you.

When I use to perform classical music under the tutelage of the the late great Dr. Walter Turnbull we learned that clapping in between movements or grand pauses is inappropriate. That always fascinated me because Dr. T was an incredible teacher and got us sing classics like Cantata 191 with mind blowing passion, I’ve personally never connected with music more then when I use to sing under him, and I’ve definitely never heard classical music sound anywhere close to that good. When we would finish the audience would instantly forget the etiquette and start clapping before they realized what they were doing. The point is that getting into clap mode takes you away from the piece and the experience the composer was trying to create. In the age of skip everything and immediate satisfaction music is rarely given the time to develop and seduce and I think we’re deprived because of it.

Anyways, though they have little in common, Ryans work made me think of those performances because his tapes have the same beautiful structure and movement. I highly recommend just pressing play and allow yourself to be entertained. Sure you could skip around but it’s just sooo much better to sit back and let it breath, develop, settle, build back up and take you on a journey. Anti-winter 3C is yet another fantastic effort and we’re delighted to bring it to you, enjoy.
